So sophisticated paint color

So sophisticated paint color DEFAULT

I keep flirting with the idea of painting a wall in our home pink. It can make such a chic, feminine, and tranquil statement. Maybe a guest bedroom? It started when I stumbled upon an image of Moda Operandi’s New York showroom, and holy hand painted lovely pink de Gournay wallcovering, Batman!! Best Sophisticated, Chic and Subtle Pink Paint Colors are comin’ at ya!

Best Sophisticated, Chic and Subtle Pink Paint Colors

It is difficult to push pretty pink paint from your consciousness after you see it done so successfully. Need proof? SEE THIS.

On a trip to Arizona a few moons ago to visit my folks in their beautiful home (where the pink sunsets are legendary), wouldn’t you know it? My mom asked “How about a shade of soft blush for our bedroom?”

Well. It appears PINK is certainly having a moment, and not just with me. Hence, it was an enthusiastic YES to my mom and to today’s Best Sophisticated, Chic and Subtle Pink Paint Colors!

But which pink?

The Trouble With Pink Tones

Even when you decide on subtle, pinks are tricky, aren’t they?

Rewind to that M’O showroom in AD…it’s the brainchild of Lauren Santo Domingo. 10 years ago, she founded Moda Operandi with Aslaug Magnusdottir.

Moda Operandi exterior in NYC.

Here’s what she told Town & Country about her process:

“I can have 20 meetings to find the right color. How many pinks did we go through when we were doing our showroom? The hours just spent on de Gournay fabrics for this space. You can’t tire me out. I will get it right.”

Custom pink color-blocked stairway walls leading to the garden level at Moda Operandi inspired by Le Corbusier’s home in the South of France. The hand-rubbed wax finish is by John Opella of Minium. #pinkpaint #waxedwalls #pinkwalls #interiordesign

I love that creative spirit of perseverance! Still with me? 20 meetings and THEN a series of trials for the right pink? Oy.

Certainly it’s worth taking our sweet time with pink!

Pink Bedroom: Getting Started

Here’s how I helped my mom with her bedroom redesign project that week.

First, we discussed the mood she wished to create. (Sophisticated, romantic, and timeless.)

Brene Brown inspirational quote about imperfections on hello lovely studio. #brenebrown #imperfection #personalgrowth #quotes #personalgrowth #encouragementquote

Secondly, we discussed the room’s function and what might be added, subtracted, or rearranged. (Some furniture will be moved around, a bench will be reupholstered, new art is coming in.)

Thirdly, we shopped for linens for the bed to guide our paint color journey and also art. (She found a gorgeous quiet greyed down rosy blush pink coverlet and shams, as well as a modern art piece featuring a lamb.)

Inspiration From Art & Textiles

After my mom found the perfect art (mixed media with photograph of a lamb), it got us thinking about incorporating word art on the walls–maybe a scripture verse from the psalms?

Inspirational quote and scripture for women on Hello Lovely studio. She is strong - Isaiah She is valiant - 2 Samuel She is fearless - Proverbs She is enough - Psalm #bibleverse #inspirationalquote #faithquote #scripturequote #biblequote #christianity #quotes

Finally, I brought along one of the shams to the paint department at Home Depot and searched for a pink that isn’t bright, isn’t suggestive of candy or kids’ rooms, and is going to feel chic and restful (with zero Pepto Bismol factor!). Keep reading to see that color.

After choosing the pink paint color, I brought home a sample pot and painted a large swath on her wall so she could live with it for a week or so.

Inspirational quote on hello lovely studio: be your own hero. #inspirationalquote #personalgrowth #quotes #encouragement

Then I had to return home. My folks decided to go for it and painted an entire wall pink, lived with it for a few days, decided they loved it, then painted the whole room.

Which pink paint was chosen?

Keep reading to find out. And keep in mind, while we think it’s the right pink, it might take another trial or two since even the experts require a few.

Have a favorite pink paint color you like for walls or furniture?

The pink color at Moda Operandi’s showroom reminds me of the color of the ballerina pointe shoes in my collection of soft, satiny, dead ones.

Pink Ground, with its large dose of yellow pigment, now creates the softest blush of colour for a warm and soothing finish that doesn’t feel sugary. The perfect pink paint color can be elusive, oui? Years back, I helped my mom choose a pink for the walls of her bedroom. Subtle & Sophisticated Pink Paint Colors For Interiors includes a few personal favorites, designer curated choices, and advice to get the right pink paint color for your space.

How to Choose the Right Pink

Pinks are surely one of the trickiest paint colors to get right, and you certainly shouldn’t expect to quickly run to the paint counter and make a decision.

In the Moda Operandi showroom below, founder Lauren Santo Domingo told Town & Country it can take 20 meetings to arrive at the precisely right shade!

The South Salon features the decorative ‘Earlham’ Chinoiserie design; hand painted onto both wallpaper and silk blinds. Lauren Santo Domingo's Moda Operandi showroom in NYC. Come see the Best Sophisticated, Chic and Subtle Pink Paint Colors

But what if you aren’t working with an interior designer and don’t have a staff or access to color consultants for a dozen brainstorming sessions?

Here’s my preferred method for choosing the just right pink paint color for your space:

My Favorite Way to Choose Paint Color Samples

First, skim shelter magazines to find an example or examples of beautiful, sophisticated pinks that you can tear from the magazine.

Elizabeth Gilbert inspirational quote. #elizabethgilbert #quotes #inspirationalquotes

Second, go shopping and keep your eyes peeled for a pink fabric or item that speaks to you. Get a swatch of the fabric or buy the objects if they can easily be returned (unless you want to keep them!).

Glennon Doyle inspirational quote from

Third, head to the paint department with your magazine tear sheets and pink objects to match paint swatch cards to them.

Brene Brown inspirational quote about courage, belonging, vulnerability, and integrity. #brenebrown #inspirationalquotes #wisdomquotes #selfkindness #spiritualtransformation #quotes #vulnerabilityquotes #couragequotes #selfawareness

Fourth, buy sample pots in the colors you chose to try on your wall.

Blush pink drapes and accents in a bedroom by Suzanne Kasler in Atlanta.. Window treatments are made of a Nancy Corzine linen. #bedroomdecor #classicdecor #palepink #FrenchCountrydecor

Why not just custom color match the fabric or object?

While you might be able to have your paint expert color match the pink magazine inspiration or object, I haven’t had the best experience with this method. I find it to be ultimately more convenient to choose an established color in the system and tweak its saturation as necessary later.

Rich & Serene | Brown Walls are Back, Baby!

If you’re embracing neutrals this year, we have a suggestion: paint those walls brown! Whether they are dark, light, warm, or cool, you really can’t go wrong. Today, we’re rounding up our favorite brown paint colors plus sharing some inspo from our favorite designers who are leading the charge on this revamped color trend.

Brown_Paint_Colors_Headers_Light.jpg

Don’t know where to start? Light brown tones are the perfect place! They are basically no commitment and toe the line so closely to taupe that your room won’t feel too dark. For some really gorgeous light brown tones, we were so inspired by the colors Benjamin Moore has to offer! Copley Gray is just dazzling in the way it coats the walls and travels up to the beautifully a-framed ceiling. It’s the perfect paint color for the bedroom.

Benjamin Moore also nailed it with Kingsport Gray. This brownish-gray color from the Historic Color collection pairs beautifully with rustic textures and plenty of plants. The gray tones in this shade work so well with darker feature like rich wood tones, iron, or rustic pottery (hey there, Vintage Pottery collection).

If you are worried about repeating history (aka all those taupe walls circa ), keep your color palette neutral with creamy whites and wood tones and avoid red at all costs. Sorry, red lovers.

Brown_Paint_Colors_Headers_Dark.jpg

Are you feeling daring? Are you feeling bold? Are you ready to say yes to chocolate walls? (Are you over these rhetorical questions?) These absolutely beautiful lacquered walls are all drama and no Willy Wonka. The high-gloss color in David Netto’s dining room is none other than Tanner’s Brown by Farrow & Ball and it’s absolutely scrumptious. Need more deep brown paint color inspo? Tarpley Brown by Benjamin Moore is so sophisticated in this blue and brown library.

Brown_Paint_Colors_Headers_Cool.jpg
Brown_Paint_Colors_Headers_Warm.jpg

All sorts of earthy inspiration can be found in cool brown paint colors. Shades like Fairview Taupe by Benjamin Moore are the perfect brown paint color for living rooms because they are subtle in saturation yet rich on the walls. If you’re looking for that perfect, calming color, Weimaraner by Benjamin Moore is it! We can see this beautiful cool brown being the perfect shade for moody kitchen cabinets or in a small space like a bathroom or hallway.

Need a little more convincing? Don’t worry, we have more inspiration for you! We are absolutely obsessed with these rich chocolate walls from William McLure and Matthew Carter. The white accents just pop and the artwork is unmissable! We have to say it… brown might be the perfect dark wall color.

What about brown walls in the bedroom? Warm orange-browns and taupes create such dreamy, relaxed vibes + it is SO easy to style baskets, dried florals, or other natural hues. Steph Gowla's neutral color palette is so charming and that built-in shelf is to die for. Styling can make a world of difference in a space and when paired with a brown paint color, you can’t go wrong.

While it might seem like you just covered tired brown walls with a fresh coat of white paint, don’t shy away from the color trend! Trends are cyclical and always come back in one way or another. We love how brown is returning in this chic, calming way but we want to hear what you think! Let us know in the comments! For more paint inspiration, check out our previous posts below!

Color of the Year and Color Trends 2022 - Benjamin Moore

We’re going to let you in on a little secret: Choosing the right neutral paint color is more difficult than you’d think. At first thought, it seems like you can’t go wrong with a taupe, gray, or off-white. After all, neutrals are known for their enduring versatility. But while these go-with-anything hues can transcend time and trends, they are as numerous as they are complex. Plus, one wrong undertone can throw off your room’s atmosphere.

To help you home in on your favorite hue, we talked to dozens of designers about their favorite neutral paint colors. It doesn’t matter if you prefer charcoal, cream, or something in between, you’re bound to find the right shade below. And best of all? These shades can work for a myriad of spaces, so be sure to keep them in mind for your entryway, kitchen, or bedroom.

1Paean Black by Farrow & Ball

“I’m always looking to pair our wallcoverings with the perfect paints that highlight our designs. Farrow & Ball has the most gorgeous velvety black shade that looks extraordinary paired with our Dahling [wallpaper] in charcoal. We highly suggest painting the ceiling and crown molding in this deep dark color to make the paper pop.” — Melinda Marquardt, The Vale London

2Table Linen by Portola Paints

“Table Linen on its own has a bit of a creamy, almost yellow undertone that, when paired with bright white, might feel too buttery. When you pair it with deeper, more saturated colors like Figueroa and Piano Room, it cuts all the yellow out and it just feels like a warm white.” — Jamie Davis, Portola Paints

Benjamin Moore Thunder (1)

Benjamin Moore Thunder AF is a soft neutral gray paint color that will add sophistication to any space.

I know what you are thinking, another gray paint color.

But, this is not a gray off the list of the usual cast of characters. This gray, in my humble opinion, does not get the love it deserves.

That’s why for today’s post I want to turn the spotlight on and give this fantastic gray it’s moment to shine.

Allow me to introduce,

Benjamin Moore Thunder AF

Benjamin Moore Thunder

So what is it about BM Thunder that is so fantastic?  Where do I begin?

For starters it is in the Color trends Palette for   So that is kind of a big deal.

It’s also a part of the Affinity Color Collection by Benjamin Moore.

What is the Affinity Color Collection by Benjamin Moore? I’m glad you asked.

Benjamin Moore Affinity

A sophisticated palette of harmonious hues designed to express your color vision with confidence. Our most recent introduction of beautiful colors was designed expressly so that each color works seamlessly on its own or in combination with any other color in the Affinity palette.

Benjamin Moore
Benjamin Moore Thunder

Another reason I sing such high praises of this gray is that it’s pretty dang neutral in terms of gray paint colors. However, like all grays, some sneaky undertones can show up in certain lighting, but I’ll get to that in a little bit.

Let’s get a little technical with Thunder Benjamin Moore before going anything further. By technical I mean LRV. I guess I could have just said that, to begin with.

Thunder has an LRV of

As a reminder, LRV, as defined on the Benjamin Moore Website, is

a measurement commonly used by design professionals—such as architects and interior designers—that expresses the percentage of light reflected from a surface. LRVs range from , with being pure white and 0 being absolute black.

So, the higher on the LRV scale the more light that paint color will be reflecting. With an LRV of , Thunder is sitting pretty almost smack in the middle of the scale.

What Color is Benjamin Moore Thunder?

Ben Moore Thunder is a soft and sophisticated gray. It’s not too dark yet, it’s not too light, you can say it is the middle of the road. If you compare it to BM Edgecomb Gray, you can see its much darker. Then is you compare it to BM Sparrow, it is lighter.

There are also no incredibly strong undertones pulling it one way or another as you see in some other gray paint colors. Yes, some undertones will show in certain light situations. However, Thunder is a great versatile gray paint color that stays fairly neutral.

Let me add, BM Thunder is best suited for a space that is well lit. I’d say the more light the better for this guy.

This picture was taken in a dimly lit hallway. You can see how the color on the paint chip appears to be dark.

For reference, the color on the wall next to the white trim is Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. You can see that the tone of these two colors is close. Thunder is a tad bit darker than Repose Gray. But that’s only comparing off the paint chip sample.

Is Thunder Considered Greige?

Thunder can be considered a greige.  But, in different lighting situations, it can look more gray than greige once it’s painted on the wall. If you were to look at the paint chip you get from Benjamin Moore, it does, however, look a bit more beige.

That’s the problem with those small paint ship samples. They aren’t fully accurate. Always test swatch the actual paint color or use  Samplize peel & stick paint samples to test out paint colors. Check out my full review on Samplize Peel & Stick Paint Samples.

Don’t forget to pick up these amazing painting tools! They will only make your life easier!

Is Thunder Warm or Cool?

Now, when you look at the paint strip, Thunder looks very warm when compared to the cooler Benjamin Moore Metropolitan. But, that’s because you are seeing it next to other colors. When you take Thunder on its own, you will see it’s not that warm of a paint color. Yes, there is warmth in it because of its undertones but. it is not overwhelming.

In my opinion, BM Thunder strikes a beautiful balance between warm and cool.

Thunder paint strip

Benjamin Moore Thunder’s Undertones

Now we are getting into the good stuff, Thunder’s undertones.

Undertones are what make a color. Thunder has subtle greige undertones. It also has a tiny bit of purple in there. The undertones are not too cool, yet not too warm. Basically it’s the perfect balance of both warm and cool.

Benjamin Moore Thunder and Lighting

  • North-facing rooms – Light in North-facing rooms come off cooler and somewhat bluish. Lighter colors appear more muted, while bolder colors will show up, or appear better. Thunder in a north-facing room has the potential to appear cooler and even show that slight purple undertone it has,
  •  South-facing rooms– In South facing rooms, there tends to be a consistently bright light throughout the day. Warm and cool tones work with south-facing light, This light intensifies colors, so darker colors will seem brighter while,  softer colors will almost look like they are glowing. Benjamin Moore Thunder will look it’s best in a south-facing room.
  • East-facing rooms– East facing rooms have the brightest light in the mornings, with a yellow-orange tone.  If an east-facing room will be used mostly in the evenings, going with a warm palette will help balance the lack of natural light. Thunders warmer tones may come out more in the morning of an East-facing room.
  • West-facing rooms- Early evening is when West-facing rooms have the best light. Warmer tones might seem overwhelming because of the red-orange the light gives off. However, if the main use for the room is in the mornings, the colors won’t appear as intense. Thunder in a west-facing room will look warmer because of the red orange light.

WAIT! Before you start painting make sure you have the best painting tools to make your job easier. It will take hours off your painting times!

Where can you use Thunder BM AF?

Considering Benjamin Moore Thunder is such a versatile gray, it can be used anywhere.

Use it on the Exterior of a home.

The exterior of a home is the perfect spot to use Thunder. This soft gray will look absolutely stunning. But remember because it is on the exterior, Thunder will surely look lighter because of the full exposure of natural light.

Pair Thuner with a soft white like Sherwin Williams Pure White to really make it shine.

Thunder vs. Revere Pewter

Benjamin Moore Thunder and Revere Pewter are both fantastic gray paint colors, but how do they compare?

  • Revere Pewter has an LRV of which is a tad higher than Thunders
  • Thunder is more of a neutral gray. whereas Revere Pewter is more of a greige.
  • Revere can sometimes look a little muddy or earthy.
  • Thunder has the tiniest bit of purple in it and Revere has a touch of green in it.
  • Thunder is well balanced between warm and cool tones.
  • Revere Pewter has warm tones.

Who is the winner of this paint color battle?  I don’t think there is a winner or loser here. Both Benjamin Moore Thunder and Revere Pewter are fabulous gray/greige paint colors. It depends on whether you are looking for a warm or more neutral paint color.

In my opinion, I gravitate towards Thunder.

Benjamin Moore Thunder Recap

  • Thunder by Benjamin Moore is a mid-toned greige paint color.
  • It doesn’t have any overwhelming undertones coming through.
  • There is however a slight purple undertone that can be seen in certain lighting situations.
  • Thunder is a part of the Affinity Color Collection.
  • BM Thunder is in the Color Trends Palette

Final Thoughts

I think Benjamin Moore Thunder is an outstanding gray paint color that has a soft and sophisticated look to it. This mid-toned gray provides a beautiful neutral backdrop for a well-lit room with lots of natural light.

I think this color has been under the radar for too long. But now that it’s on the Color Trends Palette for , I think it will get the recognition it deserves.

Benjamin Moore Just Released the Most Sophisticated Paint Color Of The Year

This year has been something else. If you find yourself Googling "wellness retreats" or clutching your healing crystals or meditation pillow, you're not alone. In fact, the frenetic pace and constant news alerts of our time inspired Ellen O'Neill, director of strategic design intelligence at Benjamin Moore, and her team of color and design experts to land on the brand's highly anticipated color of the year: Metropolitan AF, a stylish gray with cool undertones, (a win for neutrals!).

"The world was ready for a pause. It was time to dial down all of the noise," O'Neill tells us. "Since announcing [the fiery red] Caliente AF last year, we were all gravitating toward a softer, more serene environment. We felt the need to detach from 24/7 technology and were looking for spaces that are silent. Museums, monuments, gardens, statuaries, long walks along stone walls-we were gravitating toward spaces and moments that embraced this color palette."

WHY WE LOVE: Behr’s Color of The Year

After learning that it was nature that inspired O'Neill and her team's choice for a soothing gray, it's easy to see why the shade is Martha-approved (and the backdrop of her Bedford farmhouse kitchen). All the exteriors of her home and property are painted a beautiful shade of gray, and her kitchen cabinetry also sports the hue.

Plus, as Martha Stewart Living's home editor Lorna Aragon points out, the color works just about anywhere. "It's a classic neutral and can go in so many directions depending on what you pair it with." Think: glamour in the living room, serenity in the bedroom, a zen moment in the bath-you get the idea.
