The Tropic Clarifying Hair Wash claims to be a multi-purpose product, and it contains aloe vera to soothe and refresh the scalp, babassu extract to soften and nourish the hair and coconut-derived cleansers to remove product build-up. It pairs an “eco-conscious” shampoo that cleans from the hair root to tip with a conditioner that's designed to treat dry, lacklustre hair. It can be used as a daily treatment or an intensive conditioning mask and also contains plant proteins, keratin and murumuru butter.

GHI EXPERT VERDICT

Our testers agreed that this combination left their hair clean, shiny and soft. The shampoo produces a rich lather and reduced frizz, with 87% agreeing that their hair felt nourished and was easier to manage. One testers also said that it didn’t wash out too much colour, either. The conditioner has a creamy texture and was also effective as an overnight hair mask, leaving locks shiny by morning. It held heated styles for several days, too.

When I first heard that one of my favourite skincare brands, Tropic were bringing out a new hair care range I was so excited to see what they had come up with! Having always been so impressed with their skincare and body care products I was really keen to get my hands on the new hair care range and try it out for myself. I love trying out new hair care products as it's a part of my routine that I am often happy to change up regularly as I think my hair really benefits from using different products. I have quite fine hair which I colour fairly regularly so it is prone to feeling dry and dehydrated at times and I'm therefore always keen to find products which will help to really nourish and hydrate my hair and keep it looking healthy.

So what's in the new hair care range I hear you all ask! Well, impressively, Tropic have gone a little further than just bringing out a standard shampoo and conditioner...

First up we have the Clarifying Hair Wash which in essence is the shampoo. This product was created with only biodegradable ingredients to help cleanse and refresh oily hair from root to tip, without posing a threat to marine life. The coconut derived cleansers within this hair wash provide a deep, yet gentle, clean and help to remove any buildup from your hair. Product buildup is a big annoyance of mine which is why I so often do change up my haircare routine as sticking to the same products for a long time can really lead to this too. This product is also silicone free and silicone is the main ingredient within hair products which leads to that horrible build up so you really don't have to worry about that with this product. This hair wash also contains Aloe Vera juice and babassu extracts which help to rehydrate your hair.

On trying out this product I was really impressed by how well and quickly it foamed up. One issue I have had with naturally derived shampoo products in the past is that they haven't felt as foamy as other shampoos but this one certainly didn't disappoint in the bubbles department! And maybe it's just me, but I always feel like the more bubbles, the cleaner my hair feels for it. The Clarifying Hair Wash is also a super concentrated formula meaning a little goes a long way.

The follow up product to this is their Hair Feast Deep Conditioning Treatment which can be used just like a usual daily conditioner, or left on for longer / overnight for a more intense treatment. This product contains murumuru butter which is rich in vitamins and minerals and helps to fortify your hair from the root. The plant proteins within Hair Feast also help to strengthen strands while keeping the formula vegan friendly, whilst the nourishing oils from jojoba and tamanu deeply hydrate your hair. When I first started using this conditioner I just loved how thick and buttery it felt in my hand and you can almost tell just from seeing and feeling it that it's going to have lots of conditioning power.

I've been testing these products out for a while now and the combination of the Clarifying Hair Wash and Hair Feast have just felt perfect on my hair. I've really loved how soft and healthy my hair has felt after washing and it looks in great condition. I've enjoyed using these products so much that I now save them for when I want a guaranteed good hair day! They are definitely at the pricier end of what I would usually pay for haircare products but personally I love to have special products like this to hand for the days when I really do need a good hair day or want to feel my best.

The range doesn't stop there as Tropic have also brought out their new Hair Smooth Radiance Oil which is a light styling oil designed to help soften and tame your hair. This product contains Abyssinian oil which is rich yet lightweight and fast absorbing. The maracuja oil within this product is from a variety of the passion flower plant and this helps give hair a more shiny and glossy look. Hair Smooth also contains vitamin E which works to hydrate, repair and nourish hair.

I have always loved using a tiny amount of oil on my hair as it can tend to be a little frizzy and fly away in places so I was really pleased to see this included within the new range.  Once my hair is washed and dried I apply one pump of this throughout the ends and it works like a dream. It also leaves my hair looking extra rich and glossy! This has fast become one of those products that I would really miss now if I didn't have it. And again, a little goes a really long way with this and I can see this bottle lasting me years!

Further products within Tropic's new haircare range include their Nourishing Hair Cleanser & Scalp Massager. The Nourishing Hair Cleanser is an additional hair cleansing product, but this one is quite different to the already mentioned Clarifying Hair Wash. This is in fact a non-foaming cream cleanser, which has been specifically developed for sensitive scalps and dry hair. This product is particularly good for anyone who may have coloured or bleached hair which, as we all know, can be really damaging to our hair, or very thick hair that doesn't need washing regularly. I do have my hair coloured fairly regularly and I am always therefore looking for products which will help pro-long my colour whilst also ensuring that my hair stays looking healthy.

The great thing about this product is that it can just be used on its own, it's that nourishing! But if you do feel like you need a deeper clean afterwards then you can also follow up with the Clarifying Hair Wash and Hair Feast if need be. When I've tried this on its own its worked perfectly and almost like a two in one cleanser and conditioner. It's left my hair feeling amazing!

One thing I really love about the Nourishing Hair Cleanser is that you can also use Tropic's Scalp Massager with it to get a much deeper and therapeutic clean. I have absolutely loved using this massager which has surprised me as it's not something I would usually go for. But the feeling of gently massaging my scalp with this has just been incredible and so relaxing. I've enjoyed every minute of it! Sadly it's not something I would have time for on a daily basis but on the days where I have wanted a deeper hair clean, and I've been able to spend more time in the shower, this has been perfect!

If you like the look of all of the products featured within this post and would like to try them out for yourself then I'd really recommend taking a look at Tropic's Hair Care Discovery Kit which contains miniature versions of these products. They're the perfect size for testing them out or for taking abroad with you in your hand luggage, and a set with the scalp massager is only £20!

And, if you didn't already know, Tropic are also proudly PETA, Leaping Bunny and Vegan Society certified so their products are all completely cruelty free and suitable for vegans.

Have you tried anything from Tropic's haircare range yet?

What products do you like the look of?

GHI Expert Verdict

Testers liked the tube packaging design, and they found it easy to manage. Over 90% found it easy to distribute over the scalp and liked the texture, which was not too runny. Generally, the product was effective at conditioning the hair. To stop hair feeling heavy, be sure to rinse the product out thoroughly!

MY HAIRCARE ROUTINE - TROPIC SKINCARE - Charlotte Jordan

I have the thickest hair in the world.

Honestly, it’s true.

I’ve always had to use shampoo and a large dollop of conditioner for every wash, convinced that only this will tame my unruly mop into submission. I’ve had mixed results with the usual brands and I get through a shed load of conditioner.

When Tropic sent me their Hair Care Discovery Kit to try, I was intrigued to see whether it would feel different, how it would manage my barnet, and whether it’s worth the price tag.

There’s basically 4 products to try

1  Clarifying Hair Wash (Shampoo)

2  Nourishing Hair Cleanser (Gentle Shampoo)

3  Hair Feast (Conditioner)

4  Hair Smooth (Styling Oil)

The first 3 are all a similar colour, shape and labelling so make sure you know which you’ve grabbed before you get in the shower without your specs.

NOTE TO THE HAIRCARE WORLD – PLEASE MAKE LABELS BIGGER FOR THOSE OF US WHO CAN’T SEE IN THE SHOWER!!!

It feels a bit like the ABC of skincare only this is the “ABC of haircare”. You just need to find out which combination suits you best and stick with it.

CLARIFYING HAIR WASH

There’s new terminology to learn but it makes sense. The Hair Wash replaces Shampoo. It’s created sulphite, paraben and cruelty free – music to my ears – with all natural ingredients to cleanse and refresh your hair. And it really does. It’s a light thin consistency – a little goes a very long way.  Also it smells amazing – fresh and summery. Think refreshing lemon sorbet on the beach in the sunshine, but instead of soggy sandy hair, your tresses will be bouncing in the breeze – soft, smooth and glossy.

Clarifying Hair Wash 250ml £16

NOURISHING HAIR CLEANSER

This is more of a gentle cleanser, developed for sensitive scalps and dry hair. If you’re toying with the vegan life, you’ll know all about the hidden power of nut oils in our diet. This has Macadamia oil in abundance, which helps restore dry hair. It’s packed with arginine – an essential nut based amino acid – that gives protection and (hallelujah) prolongs our colour. It doesn’t foam and is really gentle on your scalp.

You can even add a scalp massager for an extra £5. That might be nice.

Nourishing Hair Cleanser 250ml £18

HAIR FEAST

The clue’s in the name with this one. It’s a proper feast for your hair. I normally need a giant blob of conditioner to soften up and calm down my super thick hair but again found that less is more.

My lovely Tropic Ambassador advised me that conditioner should only be applied to the ends of my hair and not massaged into the scalp. Top Tip. So I’m using less, working just a small amount through the ends and seeing great results.

I wash my hair 2/3 times a week but it can be used as a daily treatment, or an intensive conditioning mask if left for 10 minutes or more.

The Murumuru butter, from tropical palm fruits, gives strength and shine, and the jojoba and tamanu  – full of vitamins and minerals – give deep hydration, and are great for dry scalps and dandruff.

Hair Feast 200ml £18

HAIR SMOOTH

Once all the bathing and beautifying is over, you’ll need to actually dry your hair. If you’re anything like me you’ll take a deep breath, prop your phone up so you can be entertained by IG stories while you dry, and tolerate the next 15 minutes while you attempt to drag your wet hair into some sort of socially acceptable style.

I recently invested in a GHD Hairdryer which is moderately marvellous, but hasn’t made anything like the positive difference that Tropic Hair Smooth has made.

For years I have been using an “off the shelf” blow dry spray. 3 for 2 of course, but here’s my promise – if you try this gorgeous Hair Smooth just a couple of time – you’ll never go back  to your old ways again.

Just 1 tiny squirt massaged into wet hair makes all the difference in the world. Don’t be tempted to use more – it’s oil, remember.

Think of the most exotic fruit you can imagine, then scoop out the flesh, remove the seeds and extract the oil – passion fruit oil, of course.

Remember that night when you sat on the edge of a Balian beach watching the sunset with a cocktail in your hand.  It’s that moment in a little bottle. Much better than L’Oreal, because you really are worth more.

Hair Smooth Radiance Oil 75ml £24

THE VERDICT

I was genuinely impressed with the results and was able to style my hair in less time, with less fuss, and without any additional products.

I am resolved to never return to ‘big brand’ chemical pumped products and will always choose cruelty free. I love the Wash, the Feast and the Smooth – they work well for me. They’re my new ABC.

The price tag still stings a little but I know that sustainable shopping is about more than just the amount of cash I have to part with.  It’s about value, surely? And the fact that the products are gorgeous, they may hair happy, and they last a jolly long time makes it ok for me.

If you fancy trying it out before committing to the full size bottles – you can order the Hair Care Discovery Kit. You get a 50ml bottle of each (as pictured) and a 10ml Hair Smooth – for £20.

We’ve also reviewed Tropic daily skincare and some gorgeous Tropic Bathtime Treats. There’s also some delicious facial products for men if you’re in need of a gift idea.

Happy hair days
