Brewmaster Monk Shadowlands 9.1 guide

Introduction

Stagger, yeah let's start there.

If you spec into brewmaster you might notice that we have significantly less health than all other tanks, and it might look scary at first. There is a solution to that called Stagger.

The way stagger works is that it reduces the initial damage of a hit while delaying the rest of it as a dot. You are then able to cleanse some of that to take even less damage.

This makes Brewmaster great for progression because it generally allows healers to focus more on the raid, rather than having to babysit you like other tanks.

On top of stagger, Brewmaster has always been a reliable way to get mystic touch in a raid.

While Brewmasters weakness lies in the lack of self-healing, celestial fortune somewhat makes up for it in a raid environment where you generally have hots and beacon healing rolling on you.

What has changed

Patch 9.1.0 Changes

No changes have been made to Brewmaster Monks, however like every other class, we received a new legendary for each Covenant, as well as an extension to the soulbinds.

Covenant Legendaries

  • Call to Arms - Kyrian specific legendary crafted on Legs or Feet. Casting Weapons of Order will also summon your specs Celestial for 12 seconds. For Brewmasters, that means Invoke Niuzao, the Black Ox.
  • Bountiful Brew - Necrolord specific legendary crafted on Neck, Shoulders or Chest. Your abilities will occasionally cause a cast of Bonedust Brew at your target’s location.
  • Faeline Harmony - Night Fae specific legendary crafted on Waist or Hands. The 6% chance for your abilities to reset the cooldown of Faeline Stomp is doubled. Enemies and allies hit by it also gain the Fae Exposure buff. This buff increases the damage taken or healing received from the monk by 8% for 10 seconds.
  • Sinister Teachings - Venthyr specific legendary crafted on Wrist or Ring. Fallen Order summons an additional adept matching your specialization that lasts for 24 seconds. While any adept from Fallen Order is present, your critical strikes reduce the cooldown of the Fallen Order ability by 3 seconds.

Two new generic conduits were added to everyone.

  • Adaptive Armor Fragment is the Potency Conduit. Your primary stat is increased for 15 seconds when healer by another play, with a cooldown of 30 seconds.
  • Condensed Anima Sphere is the Endurance Conduit. When you take any damage, you heal for a percent of your maximum health with a cooldown of 10 seconds.

Patch 9.0.5 Changes

  • Shaohao's Might now causes Tiger Palm to have a 40% chance (was 10%) to deal 300% of normal damage (was 250%) and reduce the remaining cooldown of your brews by 2 additional seconds (was 1 second).
  • Mighty Pour now causes Celestial Brew to increase your Armor by 50% (was 25%) for 8 seconds (was 7 seconds), and causes Purifying Brew to have a 35% chance to not consume a charge (was 25%).

Both these legendary power changes are buffs, and while they seem strong, are still very lackluster. Mighty Pour might see some more use in very high keys.

Changes going into Shadowlands

  • ironskin brew is gone and replaced by shuffle, which is maintained simply by doing your normal rotation.
  • celestial brew has been added as a base spell, further empowered by using purifying brew, and works like other brews, so it’s cooldown is reduced through using keg smash and tiger palm 
  • keg smash now only reduces your brews by 3 seconds rather than the previous 4.
  • spinning crane kick has been added. Works as filler like tiger palm except it’s for AoE and it doesn’t reduce the cooldown on brews.
  • invoke niuzao the black ox has been made a base spell, which works both as an offensive and defensive ability.
  • touch of death has also been added, and like Niuzao, this works both as an offensive and defensive ability.
  • Exploding Keg has replaced invoke niuzao the black ox on the talent tree. Generally not taken except if you need it for its burst damage, or if you can negate certain mechanics.

Mistweaver Monk playstyle and rotation guide

Playstyle & Rotation

First and foremost: if you are the only monk in the group, remember to apply Mystic Touch to all enemies in combat at the start of the encounter and to all adds spawning!

I don’t like to use the word “Rotation” when it’s used towards healers because we generally prepare for the damage incoming or react to what is happening to raid using a list of priorities, not following a strict order of spells. I will separate this section into different parts: Single Target healing, Raid healing, Cooldowns, and Damage.

Damage:

As a healer, you always want to do as much damage as possible without letting people die. DPS priority is very simple:

  • Cast Rising Sun Kick on cooldown.
  • Alternate Tiger Palm and Blackout Kick to fish for Rising Sun Kick resets.
  • If RSK’s cooldown is below 4 seconds and you didn’t get a reset, cast Tiger Palm to get 3 stacks of Teachings of the Monastery till RSK comes off cooldown, cast RSK and then cast Blackout Kick for extra chances of resetting you RSK.

The priority above applies to all general scenarios, including Rising Mist build. However, if you have Spirit of the Crane talented, you should stack Teachings of the Monastery to 3 every time before casting Blackout Kick for extra mana return.

ST Healing:

  • Cast Renewing Mist on cooldown. It’s not a bad play to sometimes not cast it immediately once it is off CD and sit on 1 charge for a bit (especially with Rising Mist), but generally, you never want to sit on 2 charges because that will inevitably lead to less Renewing Mist casts throughout the fight.
  • Maintain Jade Serpent Statue, if talented into it. It is a heavy GCD investment, but on heavy ST damage, it is well worth it.
  • If the target is not taking consistent damage, cast Vivify.
  • If the target is taking consistent damage, cast Soothing Mist. A thing to note about Soothing Mist - it is a weak spell by itself, but it makes our Vivify and Enveloping Mist casts on the target instantly. A mistake that a lot of Mistweavers are sometimes making - casting Soothing Mist every time before casting 1 Vivify on the target, which is, in reality, worse and slower than just hard casting Vivify and moving onto the next target. However, casting Soothing Mist is generally worth it if you need to sit on that target for an extended period of time and use multiple Vivifies and/or Enveloping Mist.
  • Hard casting Enveloping Mist is generally not worth it (except certain scenarios which I’ll cover later), you will get better value casting Soothing Mist first.
  • In emergency cases cast Life Cocoon.

Raid Healing:

A couple of notes about raid healing:

  • Make sure you see Essence Font HoT on your frames. Chasing Essence Font HoTs with your Vivify or Renewing Mist will give you a double bonus from our Mastery, which makes a big difference.
  • Based on the previous point, you generally want to cast Vivify on the most injured targets with your Essence Font HoT (or the most injured people without the HoT if they are in the imminent danger of dying) right after you finish channeling Essence Font. However, maintaining Refreshing Jade Wind up if 6ppl are taking constant damage should still take higher priority than this (Unless, as stated, somebody is about to die).
  • About Rising Mist and raid healing: Arguably the most valuable part of that talent is extending our Renewing Mists on the raid, which makes our Vivify a lot stronger by increasing the number of people we cleave on. To add to this, this cleave healing generally doesn’t overheal a lot since Renewing Mists jump to injured targets. If you have more than 5 Renewing Mists on the raid, Vivify becomes more powerful and mana efficient than Essence Font, so you should keep that in mind. Enveloping Mist extension has a good value as well, provided that the player will be taking some extensive damage and prolonged Enveloping Mist won’t overheal a lot. Essence Font hoT extension can be generally good (using RSK at least once already extends the HoTs to the level, what Upwelling does) and provides us with more opportunities for HoT chasing for double Mastery heal. What does this all mean in terms of playstyle? Simply put, generally use RSK on cooldown, and use Thunder Focus Tea on RSK as well in most cases.

Cooldowns:

Mistweaver has access to two raid cooldowns, as well as personal cooldowns which can help to increase your healing output.

Raid CDs:

  • Revival: Pretty straightforward cooldown, instantly heals everyone in range for a certain amount. Since Revival now triggers Mastery: Gust of Mists on all targets it heals, it can sometimes be worthwhile to precast Essence Font to have a double Gusts proc on all targets with the Essence Font HoT (this generally applies to 1 big raid wide hit without much follow-up damage). Also, if you’re Necrolord, you always want to Cast Bonedust Brew before Revival for increased effectiveness. An important thing to note - it also works as a raid-wide dispel, which can help a lot sometimes (Good examples: missed interrupts on Hivemind in Ny'alotha, or missed interrupts on Council of Blood in Castle Nathria).
  • Yu’lon / Chi-Ji - This is where it gets interesting. Both have INSANE potential in terms of healing done because of Enveloping Breath passive, however in Yu'lon's case, it comes with a huge mana cost, so pairing it with Mana Tea / Innervate is recommended. When having Yu’lon up, just spam Enveloping Mist on different targets, cast Renewing Mist on cooldown, cast Essence Font pretty much on cooldown and extend your HoTs with Rising Sun Kick if you have Rising Mist talented. This produces ridiculous amounts of healing but also consumes a lot of mana, so if you have access to Innervate, ask for it: the amount of mana burned and healing done makes Mistweaver the prime Innervate target. Chi-Ji, on the other hand, does not rely on mana that heavily, because a lot of your Enveloping Mists will be instant and free. Chi-Ji also brings some extra damage compared to Yu’lon, which can be invaluable during progress. The biggest downside of picking Chi-Ji is losing access to Refreshing Jade Wind which also does a lot of healing, but in spite of that, having Chi-Ji is definitely an extremely solid option and will probably be picked on some bosses.

Personal cooldowns:

  • Mana Tea - An extremely potent talent which can save a lot of mana if used properly. Make sure to use it during heavy raid damage events, try to use it as close to its cooldown as possible, and pair it up with your Celestial. Keep in mind that it is off GCD now.
  • TFT - Not a cooldown per se, but a very nice ability to have. Primarily you want to use the buff on Vivify to make it free and save mana, but with Rising Mist, use it on Rising Sun Kick to extend the duration of your HoTs even more, or on Renewing Mist to extend its duration. A thing to note: if used on ReM, it will buff the base duration from 20 seconds to 30, meaning maximum extension from Rising Mist will also go up. It's generally worth to use TFT on Renewing Mist if you don't have a lot of ReMs on the raid already.

Utility abilites

Expel Harm – expel negative Chi from your body, healing and dealing 10% of the amount healed as Nature damage to an enemy within 8 yards. Generates 1 Chi.

Leg Sweep – knocks down all enemies within 6 yards, stunning them for 3 sec. CD 1 min.

Resuscitate – resurrects your ally when out of combat.

Disable – reduces the target’s movement speed by 50% for 15 sec, duration refreshed by your melee attacks. Targets already snared will be rooted for 8 sec instead.

Provoke – taunts the target to attack you for 3 sec and causes them to move toward you at 50% increased speed.

Detox – removes all Magic, Poison, and Disease effects from the target.

Zen Pilgrimage – your spirit travels to your home temple, leaving your body behind. Use Zen Pilgrimage again to return back to near your departure point (your previous location, the closest graveyard or a dungeon entrance). 10 sec cast.

Vivify – causes a surge of invigorating mists, healing the target. Costs 30 Energy, 1.5 sec cast time.

Roll – roll a short distance (15 yds) in the direction your character is facing or in the direction of your choice (W, A, S, D — forward, backward, left and right, respectively).

Paralysis – incapacitates the target for 1 min. Costs 20 Energy. Damage will cancel the effect. CD 15 sec.

Spear Hand Strike – jabs the target in the throat, interrupting spellcasting and preventing any spell from that school of magic from being cast for 4 sec. CD 15 sec.

Transcendence – split your body and spirit, leaving your spirit behind for 15 min. CD 10 sec. Keep in mind that your spirit will disappear if you move further than 100 yards away from it.

Transcendence: Transfer – the second part of the above spell. Your body and spirit swap locations, 40 yards range. CD 45 sec.

Talents

General information. On reaching several levels, you will open new Talent tiers. In each tier, you can choose one Talent at a time. Talents can affect your abilities in different ways: add new ones, replace old ones, passively modify various effects and spells. You can change Talents while you’re in Sanctums or in rest areas, but if there are no such places nearby, you can use Tome of the Tranquil Mind, which allows you to change Talents within a minute. Note that Talents can’t be changed in combat. Also, if a Talent selected in a certain tier is on CD, you’ll have to wait for it to recharge in order to change it. 

Tier 1 Lvl 15

t1

  • Eye of the Tiger – Tiger Palm also applies Eye of the Tiger, dealing Nature damage to the enemy and healing to the Monk over 8 sec. 
  • Chi Wave – A wave of Chi energy flows through friends and foes, dealing Nature damage or healing. Bounces up to 7 times to targets within 25 yards. 
  • Chi Burst – hurls a torrent of Chi energy up to 40 yds forward, dealing Nature damage to all enemies, and healing to the Monk and all allies in its path. Chi Burst generates 1 Chi per enemy target damaged, up to a maximum of 2. CD 30 sec. 

* Chi Burst is your standard choice, it’s good for both AoE and single targets.

Tier 2 Lvl 25

t2

  • Celerity – reduces the cooldown of Roll by 5 sec and increases its maximum number of charges by 1 (2->3). 
  • Chi Torpedo – replaces your Roll. Torpedoes you forward a long distance and increases your movement speed by 30% for 10 sec, stacking up to 2 times. Has 2 charges. 
  • Tiger’s Lust – can be applied to you or your ally. Increases a friendly target’s movement speed by 70% for 6 sec and removes all roots and snares. 

* The choice affects your mobility. Tiger’s Lust is preferable in neutral situations, as it’s an additional ability to your Roll. This Talent also allows you to remove movement impairing spells. Chi Torpedo is good for travelling long distances.

Tier 3 Lvl 30

t3

  • Ascension – Increases your maximum Chi by 1, maximum Energy by 20, and your Energy regeneration by 10%. 
  • Fist of the White Tiger – strike with the technique of the White Tiger, dealing Physical damage. Generates 3 Chi. Costs 40 Energy, CD 30 sec. 
  • Energizing Elixir – chug an Energizing Elixir, granting a maximum amount of Chi and Energy. 

* Fist of the White Tiger is the best choice in any situation.

Tier 4 Lvl 35

t4

  • Tiger Tail Sweep – increases the range of Leg Sweep by 2 yds and reduces its cooldown by 10 sec.
  • Good Karma – 100% of the damage redirected by Touch of Karma also heals you. 
  • Ring of Peace – form a Ring of Peace at the target location for 5 sec. Enemies that enter will be ejected from the Ring. CD 45 sec. 

* Good Karma is used by default, but this tier is quite situational, especially Ring of Peace, which is widely used in Mythic Keystones.

Tier 5 Lvl 40

t5

  • Inner Strength – each Chi you spend reduces damage taken by 2% for 5 sec, stacking up to 5 times. 
  • Diffuse Magic – reduces magic damage you take by 60% for 6 sec, and transfers all currently active harmful magical effects on you back to their original caster if possible. CD 1.5 min. 
  • Dampen Harm – reduces all damage you take by 20% to 50% for 10 sec, with larger attacks being reduced by more. 

* This tier improves your survivability. The choice depends on the type of incoming damage and its frequency. If you receive constant predictable average damage, use Inner Strength. If you have to take a great amount of Physical damage, go for Dampen Harm; of Magic damage – Diffuse Magic.

Tier 6 lvl 45

t6

  • Hit Combo – each successive attack that triggers Combo Strikes in a row grants 1% increased damage, stacking up to 6 times. 
  • Rushing Jade Wind – summons a whirling tornado around you, causing Nature damage to all enemies within 8 yards. CD 6 sec, costs 3 Energy, plus 3 per sec. 
  • Dance of Chi-Ji – spending Chi has a chance to make your next Spinning Crane Kick free and deal an additional 200% damage.

* for single targets and cleave, pick Hit Combo. For AoE – Dance of Chi-Ji. However, at the moment Dance of Chi-Ji is better than Hit Combo even against single targets.

Tier 7 Lvl 50

t7

* Whirling Dragon Punch is the best option at the moment and is used in most cases. Serenity isn’t too far behind, but it’s barely used in practice.

Here are your common builds:

Chi Wave, Tiger’s Lust, Fist of the White Tiger, Good Karma, Diffuse Magic/Dampen Harm, Dance of Chi-Ji, Whirling Dragon Punch – for single targets and cleave. For AoE: Chi Burst, Tiger’s Lust, Energizing Elixir, Good Karma, Diffuse Magic/Dampen Harm, Dance of Chi-Ji, Whirling Dragon Punch. 

Covenants: 

The Venthyr 

  • Fallen Order – opens a mystic portal for 24 sec. Every 3 sec, it summons a spirit of your order’s fallen Ox, Crane, or Tiger adepts for 6 sec. Fallen adepts assist for an additional 2 sec, and will also attack your enemies with Fists of Fury.

Very powerful burst ability.

  • Door of Shadows – castable blink with a great potential (skipping enemies in Mythic+ dungeons and outplaying such mechanics as those of Queen Azshara).

The Kyrian

Good burst ability for AoE and cleave, can compete with Fallen Order. The choice depends on the needs of your raid or Mythic + affixes.

  • Summon Steward – call your steward to bring you a Phial of Serenity. CD 4 min. It may seem useless, but don’t underestimate the extra heal. It also removes all Curse, Disease, Poison, and Bleed effects – very useful throughout the game.

The Night Fae

  • Faeline Stomp – strike the ground fiercely to expose a faeline for 30 sec, dealing Nature damage to up to 5 enemies, and restore health to up to 5 allies within 30 yds caught in the faeline. Up to 5 enemies suffer an additional damage while the spell is active. Your abilities have a 6% chance of resetting the cooldown of Faeline Stomp while fighting on a faeline.

Interesting option for M+ dungeons, but it still deals low damage. To get the most of it, you have to be in its area of effect, which is not always possible, thus making it fairly useless.

  • Soulshape – turn into a Vulpin, teleporting 15 yards forward and increasing your movement speed by 50%. You may reactivate Soulshape every few sec to teleport again. Lasts 12 sec, or indefinitely while in a rest area. Additional sprint and blink for the mobile class.

The Necrolords

  • Bonedust Brew – hurl a brew created from the bones of your enemies at the ground, coating all targets struck for 10 sec. Your abilities have a 35% chance to affect the target a second time at 35% effectiveness as Shadow damage or healing. Spinning Crane Kick refunds 1 Chi when striking enemies with your Bonedust Brew active.

Nice AoE potential in M+ dungeons. Overall, the ability is rather weak.

  • Fleshcraft – form a shield of flesh and bone over 4 sec that absorbs damage equal to 20% of your maximum health. Channeling near a corpse claims their essence to grow the shield, up to 50% of your maximum health. This is most effective against strong enemies.

Surprisingly powerful absorb, a bit better than the kyrian Phial. It can be extremely useful against raid bosses that periodically take massive damage.

Soulbinds and Conduits

As for Conduits, we can highlight the following: 

Potency

  • Inner Fury – Fists of Fury‘s damage is increased by 5%.
  • Calculated Strikes – Spinning Crane Kick‘s bonus from striking a unique target with Tiger Palm, Blackout Kick, or Rising Sun Kick is increased by an additional 10%.
  • Coordinated Offensive – after your Storm, Earth, and Fire spirits fixate on the same target, they deal 8.8% increased damage.
  • Xuen’s Bond – abilities that activate Combo Strikes reduce the cooldown of Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger by 0.1 sec, and Xuen’s damage is increased by 10%.
  • Strike with Clarity – Weapons of Order‘s duration is increased by 5 sec, it increases your Mastery by an additional 25% (requires Kyrian).
  • Imbued Reflections – Fallen Order monks deal 29% more damage and healing (requires Venthyr).
  • Bone Marrow Hops – Bonedust Brew‘s Shadow damage or healing is increased by 32%, and when Bonedust Brew deals Shadow damage or healing, its cooldown is reduced by 0.5 sec (requires Necrolord).
  • Way of the Fae – increases the initial damage of Faeline Stomp by 5.5% per target hit by that damage, up to a maximum of 27.5% additional damage (requires Night Fae).

In descending order, disregarding covenants: Inner Fury, Calculated Strikes, Coordinated Offensive for single targets or Xuen’s Bond for AoE.

The Venthyr:

Nadjia the Mistblade: 

Dauntless Duelist– The first enemy you damage in combat is marked as your Adversary. You deal 3% more damage to them, and they deal 1.5% less damage to you. You may only have one Adversary at a time (tree with 1 less Potency Conduit).

Thrill Seeker– while in combat, you gain a stack of Thrill Seeker every 2 sec, or 4 stacks on killing an enemy. At 40 stacks Thrill Seeker is consumed to grant you Euphoria, increasing your Haste by 20% for 10 sec. Thrill Seeker decays rapidly while you are not in combat.

Exacting Preparation – the benefits of Well Fed, Flask, and weapon enchant effects are increased by 20%.

Theotar the Mad Duke: 

Soothing Shade– your spells and abilities have a chance to call Tubbins and Gubbins to your side for 12 sec, parasol in hand. Standing in the shaded area grants you 525 Mastery (tree with 1 less Potency Conduit).

Wasteland Propriety – activating Fallen Order signals the start of tea time, granting 10% Versatility to you and 4% Versatility to up to 4 nearby allies. Lasts 10 sec. Tea time may only occur once every 1 min.

Refined Palate – the effects of combat potions last 100% to 200% longer.

General Draven is good for survivability and maybe PvP, while for DD’s he’s not quite useful.

The Kyrian:

Pelagos:

Let Go of the Past – using a spell or ability increases your Versatility by 1% for 10 sec. Using another spell or ability increases this amount by 1% when it is not a repeat of the previous spell or ability, stacking to 5%.

Combat Meditation – activating Weapons of Order increases your Mastery by 5% for 20 sec and occasionally expels Sorrowful Memories. Walking through Sorrowful Memories extends this effect by 3 sec.

Kleia: 

Valiant Strikes – you and your nearby allies’ critical strikes grant you stacks of Valiant Strikes, up to 40. At 40 stacks, you heal yourself for 10% of your maximum health and up to 4 nearby allies for 5% of their maximum health over 10 sec.

Pointed Courage – critical strike is increased by 1% for every nearby enemy or ally, up to 8%.

Forgelite Prime Mikanikos:

Hammer of Genesis – damaging a new enemy grants you 2% Haste for 10 sec, up to 5 stacks (tree with 1 less Potency Conduit).

Bron’s Call to Action – after using 90 damaging or healing spells and abilities, your next spell or ability summons Bron, knocking back enemies on arrival and attacking and healing your targets for 30 sec.

The Necrolords:

Plague Deviser Marileth has no useful abilities for DD’s.

Emeni: 

Gnashing Chompers – gain 3% Haste for 10 sec after defeating an enemy, up to 15%. 

Lead by Example – activating Bonedust Brew increases your primary stats by 5% and nearby allies’ primary stats by 2% for 10 sec. You gain 5% additional primary stats for each ally affected, up to 15%.

Bonesmith Heirmir:

Heirmir’s Arsenal: Marrowed Gemstone – after landing 10 critical strikes, you gain 18% increased chance to critically strike for 10 sec. Cannot occur more than once every 60 sec. 

The Night Fae:

Niya:

Niya’s Tools: Burrs – your damaging attacks and spells have a chance to toss Niya’s Spiked Burrs under your target. The burrs latch onto the first enemy to cross them, reducing movement speed by 20% and inflicting Nature damage over 6 sec (tree with 1 less Potency Conduit).

Niya’s Tools: Poison – your interrupting abilities apply Niya’s Paralytic Poison to the target, dealing Nature damage over 30 sec. Targets with Niya’s Paralytic Poison take additional Nature damage if interrupted once more. 

Grove Invigoration – healing or dealing damage has a chance to grant you a stack of Redirected Anima, up to 10. Activating Faeline Stomp grants you 1% maximum health and bonus Mastery per stack for 30 sec.

Dreamweaver has no useful abilities for DD’s.

Korayn: 

First Strike – damaging an enemy before they damage you increases your chance to critically strike by 25% for 10 sec (tree with 1 less Potency Conduit).

Wild Hunt Tactics – your damage to targets above 75% health and healing to targets below 35% health are increased by 10%. When your spells and abilities are enhanced this way, you gain 10% bonus movement speed for 5 sec.

Legendaries:

Overall, Windwalker Monk has 16 available Legendary Items.

Let’s have a look at the most useful of them:

Good item effects:

Weaker than others.

Possible for AoE and cleave, but weaker than other effects.

  • Keefer’s Skyreach – Tiger Palm now has a 10 yard range and dashes you to the target when used. Tiger Palm also applies an effect which increases your critical strike chance by 30% for 6 sec on the target. This effect cannot be applied more than once every 1 min per target. 

Weaker than other effects, but it does provide some burst.

Even with the maximum number of stacks, it deals low damage.

  • Jade Ignition – whenever you deal damage to a target with Fists of Fury, you gain a stack of Chi Energy up to a maximum of 30 stacks. Using Spinning Crane Kick will cause the energy to detonate in a Chi Explosion, dealing damage to all enemies within 8 yards. The damage is increased by 5% for each stack of Chi Energy. 

A bit better for AoE than Xuen’s Battlegear.

The best items effects:

AoE or single targets, it’s good for both of these.

As for non-class Legendary Item Effects:

  • Echo of Eonar – summon a spiritual familiar to your side, increasing your damage and healing by 5%. Your spells and abilities have a chance to send your familiar to a nearby ally, increasing their damage and healing by 5% for 15 sec. 

This feature is fairly useful for the whole raid or certain classes in it.

  • Sephuz’s Proclamation – reduce the effectiveness of crowd controlling effects by 10%. Successfully applying a loss of control effect to an enemy, interrupting an enemy, or dispelling any target will boost all your secondary stats for 15 sec. Cannot occur more than once every 30 sec.

This effect has a great potential in M+ dungeons and in those areas where you can achieve its maximum duration.

If you have different Legendaries that are not listed above, and you want to find out which one will suit you better, we recommend using Simcraft.

Detailed instructions: 

  • Touch of Death – use it as often as possible, for AoE or cleave. And just don’t forget about this ability when you fight single targets.
  • Energizing Elixir (if you have it) – use on recharge at 0-1 Chi, then instantly cast Tiger Palm to generate more resources. 
  • Storm, Earth, and Fire – same as Touch of Death, spam it and combine with other damage buffs. It’s also useful for AoE if you want to quickly stack Spinning Crane Kick. Always keep 1 charge of Storm ready, so that you can use it at a proper moment. Try to cast 2 x Rising Sun Kick, Fists of Fury and Whirling Dragon Punch in a single spell use.
  • Hit Combo and Mastery – each ability that deals damage is amplified and extends these effects. 
  • Blackout Kick – used before another possible proc of Tiger Palm. 
  • Rushing Jade Wind (if you have it) – only cast on 2+ targets. Keep in mind that while this ability is active, you have reduced Energy generation. 
  • Touch of Karma – technically, it’s a defensive ability, but it can be used to deal damage. You should use it as often as possible, taking damage and completely breaking the shield to get the most benefit.
  • With Dance of Chi-Ji, use Spinning Crane Kick right after abilities with cooldowns. Next, implement the Talent proc.

Stats

Your basic stats priority is the following:

Finesse > Versatility > Mastery = Crit > Haste 

Haste reduces the cooldowns of your main abilities, GCD, increases your attack speed and Energy generation. 

Due to Mastery, your abilities deal 10% more damage when they are not a repeat of the previous ability. Mastery level affects the ability damage.

Versatility simply amplifies damage dealt and reduces damage taken.

Crit increases your chance to deal double damage with your abilities. 

These stats are connected quite tightly, while their value is constantly changing. 

For that reason, we recommend that you use Simcraft or Raidbots.com after getting new equipment, so that you can know for sure what attribute to focus on.

PRO Tips:

Windwalker is not a difficult spec to play. You will deal great DPS if you’ll follow the base priorities. Always try to maximize the usage of Touch of Death in M+. Don’t forget to focus your copies from Storm, Earth, and Fire on the single target if you’ve got to kill it fast. Touch of Karma should be used as an offensive ability if you don’t need any defense atm. Don’t forget to use Transcendence to get an advantage in the battle if you’re being knocked out or you have to change your position ASAP.

Introduction

This page describes the basic spells and passives all Brewmaster Monks have at Level 60. It goes over the main aspects of the specialization to help understand the remainder of the guide. It can also be useful as a quick reference.

If you are leveling a Brewmaster, you likely will not have access to all of the abilities and passives listed here. However, our leveling guide can help specify when you will unlock everything.

Primary Resource of a Brewmaster Monk

Energy is the main resource available to Brewmasters, and also results in them having a natural global cooldown of 1 second.

Energy is generated on its own over time, with how much you receive depending upon your Haste. Its maximum capacity is 100, and you will start out at that amount. Whatever Energy you would have generated while already at 100 will be wasted.

Many abilities available to a Brewmaster do not have an Energy cost, and are only limited by their cooldown timer. Balancing the use of Energy-spending abilities with free abilities forms the core of managing Brewmaster spells.

Baseline Brewmaster Passives

Stagger IconStagger is a unique way Brewmaster Monks receive damage. When any damage is taken, it is split into a chunk you take immediately, and a staggered portion which you take over 10 seconds. How much of an enemy's attacks you stagger will depend on your Agility and their level. In addition, you can only stagger magic damage equal to 35% of the amount you would from physical attacks, which also includes almost all damage over time effects. Certain talents and spells can also modify Stagger.

Shuffle IconShuffle is the main way to increase how much damage you can Stagger IconStagger as a Brewmaster. Certain abilities will provide you with Shuffle, and you can extend this duration to a maximum of 15 seconds.

Mystic Touch IconMystic Touch causes enemies you damage to take 5% more physical damage from everything. This effect is exclusive to monks and is desirable in all forms of content.

Mastery: Elusive Brawler IconMastery: Elusive Brawler is the Brewmaster Mastery, causing you to gain dodge chance equal to your Mastery percentage after being hit by an autoattack until you successfully dodge. This effect can stack to the point of giving you more than 100% dodge chance. It also increases your Attack Power.

Gift of the Ox IconGift of the Ox is a healing passive. It generates small yellow orbs as you take damage, which heal you if you walk over them or will do so on their own after 30 seconds. You can only have up to 5 spheres active at a time.

Celestial Fortune IconCelestial Fortune increases all healing you receive, with the chance to occur being equal to your Critical Strike. In addition, it increases the size of any absorbs on you by 65% of your Critical Strike chance.

Brewmaster's Balance IconBrewmaster's Balance is a passive to assist you in tanking, increasing your total Armor by 25 percent and providing a 10% reduction to all damage.

Brewmaster Brews

Brews form the core defensive kit of a Brewmaster, and act as their main way to interact with Stagger IconStagger

Celestial Brew IconCelestial Brew is one of your main defensive tools and allows you create a powerful shield that absorbs all damage. This shield will last for 8 seconds or until you have taken enough damage to break it. It has a 1-minute cooldown but can be reduced by certain talents and abilities. Note that this defensive ability is on the global cooldown.

Purifying Brew IconPurifying Brew is your main source of active mitigation. It removes 50% of the damage you are currently Stagger IconStaggering. It has 2 charges with an 20-second recharge that is reduced by Haste. Certain talents and abilities can reduce the cooldown further. In addition, using Purifying Brew will increase the size of the absorb on the next Celestial Brew IconCelestial Brew you use, based on how much Stagger damage you have removed.

Fortifying Brew IconFortifying Brew is a very powerful defensive cooldown. For 15 seconds after casting it, you take 20% less damage, Stagger IconStagger more damage, and your Health is increased by 20%. You are very difficult to kill with this active, but it is balanced by a 6-minute cooldown. Certain abilities can reduce the cooldown, however.

Brewmaster Offensive Spells

Keg Smash IconKeg Smash causes you to throw a keg at your enemy, dealing large AoE damage and slowing those hit by 20%. It also reduces the cooldown of all your Brews by 3 seconds and grants you 5 seconds of Shuffle IconShuffle. Using Keg Smash costs 40 Energy and has an 8-second cooldown, reduced by Haste. Finally, this ability will deal a little less damage to every target if hitting more than 5 in a single cast.

Blackout Kick IconBlackout Kick has no cost, deals some damage, and grants you a stack of Mastery: Elusive Brawler IconMastery: Elusive Brawler along with 3 seconds of Shuffle IconShuffle. It has a 4-second cooldown that is not reduced by Haste.

Breath of Fire IconBreath of Fire deals damage in a cone in front of you and has no cost on a 15-second cooldown. Any targets that have already been hit by Keg Smash IconKeg Smash will be afflicted with a DoT that causes them to deal 5% less damage to you for 12 seconds.

Tiger Palm IconTiger Palm is your main single-target filler spell. It deals low damage and reduces the cooldown of your Brews by 1 second. Using Tiger Palm costs 25 Energy.

Spinning Crane Kick IconSpinning Crane Kick is your main multi-target filler spell and costs 25 Energy to use. It deals four ticks of damage over 1.5 seconds, reduced by Haste, and can hit up to 6 targets at a time. It also will attract any nearby Gift of the Ox IconGift of the Ox spheres to you while channeling and grant 0.5 seconds of Shuffle IconShuffle each tick so long as it hits a target. You can still dodge enemy attacks while channeling this ability. You can also cast any other ability on your next global cooldown without interrupting the channel. Finally, using this ability twice in a row will add the remaining channel duration to the new cast.

Crackling Jade Lightning IconCrackling Jade Lightning is a ranged channeled spell that deals low damage to enemies and has the added effect of occasionally knocking back targets in melee. It is very expensive, costing 20 Energy to cast and 20-per-second beyond that. It should only be used to pull far away enemies.

Touch of Death IconTouch of Death acts as an execute-style offensive cooldown that also carries some defensive value. Every 3 minutes, you may instantly kill any target that has less Health than your maximum amount. However, stronger enemies — along with other players — will resist the effect and only take damage equal to 35% of your maximum Health instead, but can have this ability used on them if they are below 15% of their maximum Health. Casting Touch of Death will remove some of your Stagger IconStaggered damage equal to 200% of the damage dealt.

Invoke Niuzao, the Black Ox IconInvoke Niuzao, the Black Ox works as another hybrid of an offensive and defensive cooldown. While this 3-minute cooldown is active, a spirit of Niuzao will assist you for 25 seconds. During this time he will attack your targets, frequently Stomp IconStomp all enemies around him, and will also take on 25% of the damage you Stagger IconStagger. Using Purifying Brew IconPurifying Brew will also increase the damage of his next Stomp by 25% of the amount you have removed from Stagger.

Other Defensive Brewmaster Spells and Cooldowns

Expel Harm IconExpel Harm provides a small amount of baseline healing and also draws all Gift of the Ox IconGift of the Ox orbs to you to increase the healing amount. You will then deal 10% of the healing amount as damage to a nearby enemy. It costs 15 Energy and has a 5-second cooldown.

Zen Meditation IconZen Meditation is a channeled defensive cooldown. For 8 seconds, you take 60% less damage, but cannot attack. You can move, however. It is broken immediately on receiving physical damage and has a 5-minute cooldown.

Vivify IconVivify is a small single-target heal. It has a cast time of 1.5 seconds and costs 30 Energy. You should never cast this in active combat, only during downtime or between fights.

Brewmaster Movement Abilities

Roll IconRoll is a signature Monk ability. It causes you to roll a short distance in the direction you are moving. It has 2 charges with a 20-second cooldown, and can be further modified with certain talents.

Transcendence IconTranscendence places a copy (a "spirit") of your character where you cast it. You can then swap places with the spirit by using Transcendence: Transfer IconTranscendence: Transfer. Note that the spirit will have changed places, so if you cast it again once the 45-second cooldown is up, you will end up where you Transferred from unless you set up another spirit. There is a 10-second cooldown between placing Transcendences.

Clash IconClash is a unique movement ability that, when used, causes you and your target to charge at each other, meeting up halfway between where you both started. After you collide, all enemies within 6 yards of the impact will be rooted for 4 seconds. This ability can also be used as an extra form of interrupt against ability casts, but be warned that many enemies will often try to cast again right after being moved. Note that you must be at least 8 yards away from your target to use this ability.

Brewmaster Monk Utility

Provoke IconProvoke forces the target to attack you for 3 seconds with a cooldown of 8 seconds and has a 30-yard range. During that time your threat generation on that target is also increased. Provoke is unique among taunts in that it also increases the target's movement speed by 50% for 3 seconds!

Spear Hand Strike IconSpear Hand Strike is your interrupt. It stops a cast, and prevents similar spells from being cast for 4 seconds. It has no cost, with a 15-second cooldown and is not on the global cooldown. It is an important ability in all forms of content out there.

Paralysis IconParalysis is known as a "crowd control" spell, incapacitating an enemy target within 20 yards for up to a minute. However, any damage will break the effect. It is used to delay fighting some enemies in a pull, and can sometimes be used as an extra interrupt. Using Paralysis costs 20 Energy and has a 30-second cooldown, but can only be on one target at a time. Many powerful enemies are also immune to its effect.

Leg Sweep IconLeg Sweep allows you to stun all targets within 6 yards of yourself for 3 seconds on a 1-minute cooldown.

Detox IconDetox is a dispel that removes any Poison and Disease effects on its target. This can counter otherwise deadly effects found in many pieces of content. It costs 20 Energy and has an 8-second cooldown, but will only go on cooldown if removes an effect.

Resuscitate IconResuscitate is your resurrection spell. It takes 10 seconds to cast — reduced by haste — and can only be cast outside of combat. You should prioritize resurrecting healers during wipes, as they can resurrect all players at once.

Offensive Talented Brewmaster Abilities

Chi Wave IconChi Wave is a free ability on a 15-second cooldown that sends a bolt of energy that bounces between allies and enemies, healing or damaging them respectively.

Chi Burst IconChi Burst has a 1-second cast time on a 30-second cooldown and will damage or heal all enemies or allies in its path. You can still dodge while casting this ability.

Rushing Jade Wind IconRushing Jade Wind lasts for 9 seconds, dealing damage to up to 6 enemies around you on a 6-second cooldown. Both the duration and the cooldown are reduced by Haste.

Exploding Keg IconExploding Keg allows you to toss a flaming keg with no target cap on a 1-minute cooldown. Every target hit will deal 99% reduced damage with their autoattacks for 3 seconds.

Defensive/Utility Talented Brewmaster Abilities

Tiger's Lust IconTiger's Lust acts an additional movement ability that can be cast on either yourself or an ally within 20 yards every 30 seconds. When cast, it will remove any Snares or Roots affecting the target.

Black Ox Brew IconBlack Ox Brew will immediately restore both charges of Purifying Brew IconPurifying Brew and reset the cooldown of Celestial Brew IconCelestial Brew when used, along with regenerating all of your Energy. Being a Brew, its cooldown is also reduced by Keg Smash IconKeg Smash and Tiger Palm IconTiger Palm, along with not being on the global cooldown.

Summon Black Ox Statue IconSummon Black Ox Statue creates a statue within a 40-yard range that will pulse threat to enemies within 20 yards of it. The statue has its own Health bar and can be summoned every 10 seconds. It can also be targeted by Provoke IconProvoke to taunt all enemies around the statue.

Ring of Peace IconRing of Peace enemies from entering its area for 5 seconds, knocking them away in the process. It has a 45-second cooldown and a 40-yard range. Some enemies are immune to its effect.

Healing Elixir IconHealing Elixir restores 15% of your maximum Health, holding 2 charges on a 30-second recharge time.

Dampen Harm IconDampen Harm is a 2-minute defensive cooldown that reduces damage for 10 seconds depending on how hard the hit is. All hits will be reduced by 20%, and incoming damage exceeding 100% of your max Health will be reduced by 50%.
