Honey Stinger Waffles, Gels, Chews Review: Get the Inside Scoop BEFORE You Buy!

Introduction to Honey Stinger

Carbohydrates, especially sugars, tend to get a bad rap. While those who are not athletes may benefit from a lower carbohydrate diet, not taking in enough carbs before, during, and after exercise can negatively impact performance for athletes.

During exercise, the main source of fuel for working muscles is glycogen or the carbohydrate stores found inside the muscles. If you run out of this glycogen during a training ride and aren't taking in more carbohydrates, you will experience that hit the wall feeling known as bonking.

Taking in fast-acting carbohydrates during endurance training prevents this from happening, and can boost endurance performance. Fast-acting carbohydrates in the form of sugar are the most effective. Although there is an emphasis on limiting sugar intake, there is a time and place for it: during endurance exercise.

The Honey Stinger team knows what performance athletes have known for hundreds of years—carbohydrates, including simple sugars, provide the fast-absorbing energy that fuels athletic achievement. Choosing the right kind of carbohydrates can prevent the insulin spikes, sugar crashes, and inflammation associated with consuming too much sugar.

Why Honey?

Honey Stinger's empire of athletic snacks is built, unsurprisingly, on honey. Produced naturally by wild honeybees, with a low glycemic index for long-lasting energy, naturally sweet honey absorbs quickly and supplies the body with the energy needed to push it to the limit.

Why Honey?

Honey also contains an optimal mix of multiple carbohydrate sources, including natural sugars glucose and sucrose. This allows the body to use different pathways to breakdown and absorb the carbs, giving you faster access to energy. Not to mention, honey is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The company commits to gluten-free options, organic ingredients when possible and non-GMO ingredients when not. Additionally, they adhere to the "True Source Honey Pledge," a commitment by honey producers and importers to ethically-sourced honey.

Located in Steamboat Springs, CO, the Honey Stinger team believes in the "work hard, play hard" ethic of the performance athletes they serve. They test their products on the nearby Champagne Powder snows and the rapids of the Yampa River.

Honey Stinger Waffles

Honey Stinger Waffles were inspired by Stroopwafels, the waffle snacks sold on street corners throughout Europe, and a favorite of professional cyclists. These waffles are made with a layer of honey and sandwiched between two thin wafers. Honey Stinger Waffles are certified organic, easy to digest and come in a variety of tasty flavors.

10 Best Honey Stinger Waffles Reviewed

Due to the organic ingredients, Honey stingers made a waffle that tastes as if you made it that morning, with real strawberries. You aren't getting any of that fake red number 3 locking into your pallet. Just like the lemon, it's more a sweet cookie taste than a Jolly Rancher.

Not surprising that hint of real honey really adds to the sweet strawberry goodness. It’s a nice mix up to all those chews and shakes strawberry flavors that can sometimes stick in your pallet. The waffle makes you feel more like you had a meal than a squirt.

This one follows suit with the lemon offering 150 calories and 14 grams of sugar. The sweeteners are all organic brown rice and cane sugars. Making you feel a little better about your energy intake. However, at 30 miles, you'll use that sugar so fast it'll do its job rather than sitting there.

Although it isn't the number one seller, its awesome flavor profile crunch will keep it around for a bit. Keeping up with Honey Stingers and the rapid fan growth, we are surely buying it on Amazon or their homesite won’t be an issue anytime soon.

Honey Stinger, a US brand best known for their honey waffles, are now distributed in the UK by 2pure and their waffles and energy chews are great alternatives to stick in the bike jersey on training rides and race day. They make gels too and they're great on short rides and longer runs, but when you need some 'real food', these are strong contenders as a personal favourite.

All the important stuff first; they're organic. They're certified by the USDA and Ecocert. This means they haven't just stuck a sticker on the package without any real worth or official adjudication on their manufacturing/bee keeping (they own the bees that make the honey). They're also diary free, contain no GMO ingredients and are nut free.

Their products are all honey based rather than being made of refined sugar, meaning that less processed sugars are in the product, which doesn't mean that much on a health level, but it does mean that the manufacturing process is simpler and thus better for the environment and more controlled.

Taste wise, they're delicious! The original honey waffle is great and there are a number of flavours to cater for all tastes but the strawberry was new to me and was very welcome at the half way point of long weekend ride. Being able to eat something easily digestible that tasted and felt like food that I knew would be beneficial is the prefect solution when the prospect of a gel or dense energy bar isn't appealing. Even against the trusty banana, the waffles stand their ground as a great mid-ride snack.

If the waffle is the main, then the energy chews are the dessert. Again, all the above applies regarding the organic ingredients and natural honey sugar, but they also contain tapioca syrup, a natural sweetener made from the yucca root, a plant that is indigenous to the tropics of South America. They're gluten free and contain a claimed four different types of carbohydrate sources: glucose, fructose, maltose and sucrose.

Even if they don't, they certainly contain enough to give you a genuine boost of energy and they're incredibly moreish! Once a pack is open it's unlikely that it'll go back in the jersey for long. The pink lemonade flavour is fruity, tangy, refreshing, all the things you'd expect from pink lemonade really. On top of all that, they've got some added vitamin C in there too, which isn't famed as an energy source, but it does help the immune system and the body repair cells so it's not a bad thing.

Definitely one to try out if you're looking for a new source of power!
