Dark Souls - Pyromancy Guide

Pyromancies represent one of the three forms of magic available in Dark Souls; described in the game as the simplest magic as well as practiced by heretics and other poorly viewed people, they differ from Witchcraft and Miracles in that their power does not depend on any statistics of their character and on the fact that there is only a catalyst capable of to cast them, the Flame of Pyromancy.

Before entering into the merits of Pyromancies, however, it is good to introduce some basic concepts on their use, useful for those who tackle the game for the first time:

  • To use any Pyromancy you need the Flame of Pyromancy, obtainable from the start of the game only if the chosen class will be the Pyromancer. For all the others it is necessary to wait to free Laurentius or to meet Eingyi, as we will see later
  • As already mentioned, the power of all the Pyromancies available will depend neither on Intelligence nor on Faith, but only on the level of their only catalyst, namely the Flame. Increasing the Intelligence parameter will only increase the physical damage inflicted by the Flame of Pyromancy (which is performed with RT / R2): an always laughable attack that will never be useful to you; therefore keep in mind that increasing these two statistics is useless for the pyromancer, unless you want to use in addition to Pyromancies also Witchcraft and Miracles
  • A small exception to the above point is represented by both the Pyromancies of "Chaos", whose power as well as the level of the Flame will also depend on the number of Humanities brought by the player, and by the Pyromancies with defensive effects or status modification, such as Defensive Transpiration o Toxic Mist, which will maintain the same effects regardless of the level of the Pyromancy Flame
  • The Pyromancy Flame can only be upgraded by Pyromancers and not by blacksmiths like other objects. Its maximum value will be +15, reached which it will be possible to improve in the Flame of Evolved Pyromancy only thanks to Queelana, one of these Masters, the only one who can also bring the Evoluta up to +5
  • The speed of execution of Pyromancies, like all spells, will depend on the value of the Dexterity parameter: the higher it is, the less time it will take to cast the spells. It is good to remember, however, that once you reach 45 points in this parameter the speed of the spells will no longer increase
  • Equipping two identical pyromancies in two different slots will obviously double the charges available for that particular spell
  • Despite their reputation as simple spells, Pyromancies for their not relying on statistics to produce damage and to use only one type of catalyst immediately provide a valid help to the player both in the defensive and especially offensive phase, since they will not be few the weak fire enemies that will meet throughout the game
  • In the game there will be 20 different types of Pyromancies, one of which is only available via DLC: collecting them all with the exception of the latter will lead you to unlock an achievement / trophy of the title, Pyromancer's bond

The Masters of Pyromancy that can be found in the game will be a total of 4, each of which will be the only one to sell certain pyromancies: so be careful not to kill them before you have bought what they sell, if your intent is to collect them all!


Laurentius will likely be the first of the pyromancers you will encounter, and as his name implies he is one of many pyromancers from the Great Swamp. It will be useful at the first levels to buy some more effective pyromancy than the Fireball given by default to the pyromancer, or, if you have chosen another class at the beginning of the game, it will be the person who will provide the player with the Flame of Pyromancy.
Laurentius will also be able to evolve the Flame up to +15, for obvious payment of souls.

lease: Eingyi will be trackable and perpetually stationed in the secret bonfire of the Domain of Queelag, in the same room where you will meet the Daughter of Chaos. To get there, go down to the lower level of the room where you rang the bell and hit the illusory wall to the right of the road that leads to the Ruins of the Demon. It will be the first thing you will see once the wall is broken: don't kill him by mistaking him for a normal egg carrier and talk to him. It should also be noted that you can decide not to cure yourself and keep the egg on your head, but know that by doing so you will not be able to equip any helmets, you will be significantly weaker to fire and the souls you will collect from now on will be halved as for half absorbed by the egg. Once this has absorbed even 100.000 you will be able to perform a new attack instead of the kick, which will see a large worm come out of your head and attack the enemy; the damage of this, however, is so laughable that it is not at all worthwhile to "hatch" the egg with all the disadvantages it entails, unless you want to try a useless curiosity about the game.


The Daughter of Chaos is one of the daughters of the Witch of Izalith, along with her sisters Queelag and Queelana and the "little brother" Infinite Discharge.
She is at the head of the Covenant of the Servants of Chaos, which will be useful to receive two powerful pyromancies and to unlock a shortcut for Lost Izalith, necessary to complete in a certain way the quest of Solaire, another NPC in the game.
It will not be possible to understand his speeches if you have not equipped the Ring of the Witch, obtainable as an initial gift or by exchanging a Larva of the Sun with the Snuggly Crow; having it or not, however, will not affect entry into the Covenant.
Killing her instead will obviously be considered a betrayal to the Pact, will put out the room's bonfire (but you can still teleport on it) and will make Eingyi hostile.

lease: The Daughter of Chaos can be found in the secret room of the Domain of Queelag, the same where you will also meet Eingyi. Basically you can only talk to her, enter her Covenant or upgrade your Estus flasks with the souls of the Guardians, but if you make the Pact with her you can give her Humanity to receive two Pyromancies and a shortcut to Lost Izalith: the first you will receive as soon as you enter , but for the second pyromancy and the possibility of taking advantage of the shortcut you will first have to offer her 30 Humanities.
It is possible to exit the Pact and then re-enter it with an acquittal, but this will mean that once back the Humanities previously donated will be halved and the difference must therefore be bridged to regain the level they had before the betrayal. It is therefore advisable to donate the 30 Humanities before abandoning the Pact for another (or even ending his life) in order to receive both pyromancies in his possession and unlock the shortcut (which will remain open only if you have already gone there. before the betrayal). It will also be possible to continue donating Humanity beyond 30 units, but this will have no effect in the game.


Queelana is also one of the daughters of the Witch of Izalith, the only one who managed to escape before being transformed into a monster. The guide to Pyromancer builds in Dark Souls 3 is all you need to be on your best fire game.

Just like in the other two previous entries, Pyromancy is a way for you to deal great fire damage in both PVE and PVP.

The player can cast Pyromancies with all Flames and the White hair Talisman. We’ve also written on using DS 3 Cheat engine if that interests you.

The most important things when going for a Pyromancer build are Faith and Intelligence. Pyromancies will scale with both stats. You should aim for 40/40 in Int/Fth for good scaling and keep the other stats at a minimum for the weapons you want to use.

You’ll be a full-on caster with this one. Huge damage with little downtime between casting. You’ll also get a lot of attunement slots.

Pyromancy Spells

Spells are the bread and butter for all casters. There are 30 pyromancies. Almost all pyromancies deal fire damage. 3 out of those 30 pyromancies deal dark damage. We can divide those up into three categories: short-range, medium-range, and long-range. Below you’ll find some worthy mentions.

Short Range Pyromancy Spells

1. Flame Whip

This is one of the most underrated spells out there. If you can manage to make contact with the full flame, you’ll deal the highest amount of damage out of all the pyromancies. The only shortcoming of this spell is that it’s very easy to dodge so it’s not very viable in PVP.

2. Dark Flame and Great Combustion:

These two spells have a very small range but they do a lot of damage. They are also quite easy to spam. They work great with the Full Pyromancer build.

3. Fire Surge

This might be my least favorite spell. The damage output is quite low. It does have a few things going for it though. The casting time is very short and the hitbox from the flames is constant. It’s good when you’re up against opponents that roll a lot or just as a way to finish off someone with low health.

4. Sacred Flame

This one is very fun to use but easily punishable due to its long wind-up time. Successfully using it means taking a good chunk off your opponent’s health thanks to its built-in critical damage.

5. Seething Chaos

This is part of The Ringed City DLC. It basically acts as a time bomb. It throws a ball of fire that sticks onto surfaces and explodes to deal a small Area of Effect damage. This spell can be very useful if you’re fighting multiple enemies at once.

6. Flame Fan

This one is also part of The Ringed City DLC. It summons a big fire fan that’s within melee range, causes good damage, and can cause players to stagger on the first contact.

Medium Range Pyromancy Spells

1. Fire Orb, Black Fire Orb and Chaos Fire Orb:

These three spells are classic pyromancies and very straightforward. You create a fireball that you then throw at your enemy to deal damage. Simple spells with medium range and a good amount of damage.

  • The Fire Orb deals fire damage.
  • The Dark Fire Orb deals dark damage.

The Chaos Fire Orb deals great fire damage and creates a lava pool at the point of impact which in turn deals moderate fire damage.

2. Chaos Storm

Dark Souls 3’s version isn’t quite as powerful as Dark Souls 1 and 2 but it gets the job done. It creates multiple fire pillars and lava pools around the pillars. Those deal fire damage to whoever is hit by them and also stuns them for a couple of seconds upon the first contact.

Long Range Pyromancy Spells

1. Floating Chaos

Part of the Ashes of Ariandel DLC. It creates a medium-sized floating fireball that shoots 3 smaller fireballs. The 3 fireballs have some slight tracking and they deal fire damage.

2. Chaos Bed Vestiges

Previously known as “Forbidden Sun” in Dark Souls 2. It creates a big fireball or ‘sun’ and it reaches far targets. The fire damage output is high.

3. Black Serpent

Creates a black flame trail that deals dark damage and stuns. This spell has homing properties and can travel through surfaces like floors and walls. It can also move around all obstacles.

The Top Pyromancer Equipment

As a pyromancer, your primary tool will be the Pyromancy Flame. There are 4 catalysts that you can choose from.

  • Pyromancer Flame: Best damage output and scaling out of all 4 catalysts.
  • Pyromancer Parting Flame: Lesser damage output than the Pyromancer Flame but more effective close range.
  • White Hair Talisman: Low damage and scaling. This talisman enables you to cast both pyromancies and miracles.
  • Demon Scar: A Scimitar that enables you to cast pyromancies but its damage output is lower than the Pyromancy Flame.

I won’t get into armor or weapons since they’re more a matter of personal choice when it comes to Pyromancy. I’ll go straight to rings.

Some of the best rings for a pyromancer are the Fire Witch Ring, Great Swamp Ring, Darkmoon Ring, Sage Ring.

Pyromancy is one of three schools of magic that players can use in Dark Souls 3. Using the power of flame, pyromancies allow you to enhance your character with powerful buffs, devastating projectile attacks, and even utility effects such as healing. Pure casters and hybrid builds can get some benefit out of pyromancy.

Using pyromancies is a little more convoluted than sorceries and miracles due to the small roster of catalysts. However, this issue is small considering the versatility and raw power that pyromancies bring to the table. If you want to scorch the competition, you'll want to understand the ins and outs of this powerful school of magic.

To help players create a character that uses pyromancies, we've updated this guide to emphasize certain mechanics while making the entire guide easier to read. Why Use Pyromancy?

Pyromancy has the other schools of magic beat through versatility and visual flair. Sorcerers have great damage output and buffs, and miracles provide healing and other utility effects. Pyromancies provide both.

If that wasn't enough, pyromancies also have some of the most jaw-dropping spells in the game from a visual standpoint. Chaos Bed Vestiges, Firestorm, and Black Serpent are some of the coolest looking spells you'll find in Dark Souls 3. Pyromancies look cool, dish out tons of damage or utility, and can be used fairly early in a playthrough. If you can stand the strange scaling that pyromancies use, you're left with a powerful school of magic that is useful in every situation.

Attuning And Casting Pyromancies

Casting a pyromancy will require two things: an attuned pyromancy and a catalyst. This can be somewhat cumbersome if you're new to magic builds, so let's go over how to do both.

Attuning Pyromancies

Attuning a pyromancy can be done at any bonfire in Dark Souls 3. Rest at a bonfire, select the "Attune Spell" option, then you'll be greeted with a UI that will let you select which spells you wish to use.

Like all schools of magic, you'll need attunement slots to equip pyromancies. Your Attunement stat determines your attunement slots. Some rings, such as the Darkmoon Ring, grant additional attunement slots if you want to shift your stats towards something else.

Pyromancy Catalysts

Casting a pyromancy will require a catalyst. Pyromancers have this the worst out of every caster, as they only have four catalysts to choose from.

  1. Pyromancy Flame
  2. Pyromancer's Parting Flame
  3. White Hair Talisman
  4. Demon's Scar

As rough as that sounds, the Pyromancy Flame will cover all of your burning desires. You can obtain a Pyromancy Flame at the very beginning if you start as the Pyromancer class. If you chose a different starting class, Cornyx of the Great Swamp will give you one after you free him.

Pyromancer's Parting Flame deals slightly less damage than the normal variant. However, casting any pyromancy will leave a trail of fire that can damage nearby enemies. You might prefer this catalyst over the default variant if you play a pyromancer/melee hybrid character. You'll find this item during the Ashes of Ariandel DLC.

The White Hair Talisman has strange scaling, only using your Intelligence stat if it's equal to or higher than your Faith. This means that pyromancy builds that focus more on Faith are paradoxically worse off using this talisman. Only use this talisman if you're using pyromancies solely for buffs. You can find this catalyst in a lava pit inside the Smouldering Lake.

Finally, the Demon's Scar is a curved sword that can cast pyromancies with its heavy attack. It's difficult to parry, looks incredible, and can open enemies up to pyromancy combos if you land certain combos. Melee builds that want to turn up the heat will love this weapon. Transpose the Soul of the Demon Prince to craft this weapon.

Managing FP

FP, shorthand for Focus Points, is the resource required to cast pyromancies and various spells in Dark Souls 3. If you're new to spellcasting, this system might be somewhat confusing to you. In essence, FP is non-regenerating Stamina that all spells need. If you run out of FP, you can't cast spells.

Regaining FP is mainly done by consuming Ashen Estus Flasks, something you'll need to allocate at Andre the Blacksmith in Firelink Shrine. Beyond that, you'll need to use consumables that grant FP or use the Farron Ring to reduce how much FP you use.

If you want to be optimal, make a character with 26 Attunement. This will allow a single +10 Ashen Estus Flask will fully restore an empty FP bar, allowing you to take full advantage of your pyromancies and other spells. You'll also have four spell slots to work with.

Unlocking Pyromancies

Nearly every pyromancy in Dark Souls 3 is purchased from a pyromancer merchant, requiring Souls and a potential Pyromancy Tome. A few pyromancies can be found in the game world or transposed from boss souls, so keep your eyes peeled as you're out exploring.

There are two pyromancy vendors in Dark Souls 3: Cornyx of the Great Swamp and Karla. Cornyx handles most of the game's pyromancies. Karla handles dark pyromancies that deal dark damage.

Where To Find Cornyx Of The Great Swamp

You'll find Cornyx at the Undead Settlement, locked in a cage on the second floor of a building.

From the Undead Settlement bonfire, make your way to the mob of undead surrounding a fireplace. Hang right and cross the wooden bridge. Kill the Hollows inside, then open the door to reveal a stone bridge. Instead of crossing the bridge fully, look for the ledge under the bridge. Land on the ledge to find a hidden bonfire and a path to the top of the building. You'll find Cornyx locked in a cage up there. Speak to Cornyx to free him.

Where To Find Karla

Karla can be found in Irithyll Dungeon midway through your playthrough. She's located in a jail cell near the end of the dungeon, found just after you fight a large group of jailers. You'll need the Jailer's Key Ring to free her, which can be found in the Profaned Capital.

Instead of traveling to Yhorm, head down the ladder beside the Profaned Capital bonfire. A path will lead your outside towards a poison swamp with a building in the center of the swamp. Run to the church, climb up the ladder, then stick to the left side of the roof to find a staircase in the middle of a wall. Jump onto the staircase and follow the path to find the keyring. Backtrack to Karla's cell to free her.

Scaling Pyromancy

Pyromancy scales off of your Intelligence and Faith equally. Both stats hit their "soft cap"—where the effectiveness of each stat starts experiencing diminishing returns—at 30 points each. Due to this split stat distribution, pyromancers can use sorceries or miracles if they have the respective catalyst in hand.

Beyond stats, pyromancies also become stronger if your catalyst is upgraded. Dark Souls 3 lets you upgrade your pyromancy catalysts with Titanite. Cornyx is the only NPC that can upgrade pyromancy catalysts for you, so be sure you've rescued him if you want to play a pyromancer.

Every Pyromancy Tome

Pyromancy vendors won't teach you much without Pyromancy Tomes. There are five tomes in Dark Souls 3, each unlocking a few unique pyromancies for sale. Here's where you can find each of them.

Great Swamp Pyromancy Tome

Run down to the Crucifixion Woods, staying close to the right side of the swamp. You'll find the tome nestled between a tree and the fortress wall that runs along the northern end of the woods.

Carthus Pyromancy Tome

Cross the first bridge in the catacombs, the one protected by a red-eyed skeleton. In the next room, run up the stairs that lead left. Hang left and follow the path until you reach a ladder. Climb down the ladder, then follow the path again. When you enter a room with a red-eyed skeleton, immediately turn right to find an illusory wall. Enter the hidden room to find the tome.

Izalith Pyromancy Tome

Enter the first room on your left. Run to the end of the following room to find the tome beside a petrified goat statue.

Quelana Pyromancy Tome

Run through the door directly in front of you. The end of the hallway will lead to another room. Kill the goat, run into the next room, then kill the quadrupedal goats inside. Hang right to enter a hall. Turn right inside the hall to continue.

You should now be in a room with levitating fire orbs. Immediately turn left to find yet another hallway. Inside the hall, enter the first room on your right. You should now be staring at a brick wall covered in ashen branches. Hit the wall directly in front of you to reveal an illusory wall. You'll find the tome to the left of this hidden room.

Grave Warden Pyromancy Tome

You'll find this tome in High Lord Wolnir's boss arena. Interact with the chalice, then grab the item directly ahead.

If you don't grab the item but kill Wolnir, you can still grab the tome by backtracking to the chalice room. It'll be on a corpse in the far left corner of the room.

Pyromancy Flame is a Weapon in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered.




Flame medium used by Great Swamp pyromancers. Pyromancers arouse this flame to produce various fire arts.Equip pyromancer flame to produce pyromancy. Attune pyromancies from a scroll at bonfire.Most pyromancies have limited number of uses."
After upgrading:"Pyromancy flame drawing upon the latent power of Quelana of Izalith, mother of pyromancy.For the pyromancer, a flame is a precious thing indeed, to be nurtured, often for an entire lifetime. When the flame is shared, it creates an eternal bond between the parties."




How to Get / Where to Find the Pyromancy Flame

  • Starting equipment for the Pyromancer.
  • Obtained by other classes after rescuing Laurentius of the Great Swamp from the Depths.
  • Also obtainable for all classes through the "Talk" option from Eingyi after having spoken to him while infected with egghead. If you have less than 12 Int Eingyi will not offer you the flame.



  • After you reach +10, you will be able to talk to Quelana of Izalith in Blighttown (Swamp), who can ascend a +15 Pyromancy Flame.
  • Your pyromancies will NOT become more powerful with increased intelligence. Damage only increases with Upgrades. The scaling does however, only affect the punch.
  • Give to Frampt to receive 50 souls.



Pyromancy Flame Upgrade Table

Upgrade: up to +15, with Laurentius at Firelink Shrine after rescuing him in the depths, orEingyi,as a member of the Chaos Servant Covenant, then ascended to +5 with Quelana (see this page)

It takes 149,500 souls to upgrade the first path (Pyromancy Flame+15) and another 191,000 for the second path ("Ascended" Pyromancy Flame+5)
It takes 340,500 souls to fully upgrade all 21 levels of the Pyromancy Flame. For comparison's sake, this is enough souls to gain 55 Soul Levels (starting at SL 1).
