Tip

If you decide to walk for most of the race or your running pace is slower, be careful when choosing a race. In the race schedule, see if the race has a time limit, that is to say, a limit within which all participants must complete the race. Otherwise, your finishing time will not be taken into account and you will be left without a finishing medal.

What is a good half marathon time?

In general, most runners consider a finishing time that’s under 2 hours to be a good half marathon time. A good half marathon time depends on many factors such as age, gender, fitness level, experience, weather, and running terrain.

A good half marathon running time varies from person to person. Someone will find 2 hours a good half marathon time, while some other runner might be dissatisfied with that result.

Many factors affect the race results, including:

  • Age – Most professional half marathon runners run their personal records between the ages of 28 and 33.
  • Gender – On average, men run faster than women due to genetic predispositions.
  • Ability level – Form and health also affect your running time.
  • Experience – With years of training, you gain experience that also affects your running time.
  • Weather – A half marathon is a long-distance race. So, to have suitable conditions, it is important that it is not too hot and windy.
  • Terrain – Flat terrain is ideal for a good half marathon result since it allows you to maintain a steady pace and not lose additional energy running uphill and downhill.

A good half marathon time is a result you are satisfied with.

Tip

Do not compare yourself to others, everyone is different. Track your own results and overcome your boundaries. Enjoy running and progress gradually in order to train without injuries, because that is most important.

How long is a half marathon?

A half marathon is a road running event of 21.0975 km (13 mi 192½ yd), which is exactly the half distance of the marathon. A half marathon is known as 21K, 21.1K, or 13.1 miles, which are not exact distances but are rounded values of actual length.

How to predict your half marathon finish time?

If you want to know what time you can expect during a half marathon run, use my race time predictor. This predictor can predict the result of a targeted race and calculate its average pace based on previous run or race results.

Race time predictor assumes that the runner has done the appropriate training for the distance they want to run.

Tip

A perfect race has minimal pace changes, which is why this race predictor also calculates the average pace. This way you will avoid running too quickly in the earlier stages of a race and exhausting yourself early.

Keep in mind that the predicted result is just an estimate since factors like weather and running terrain can affect the end result of a race. It might happen that the race takes part on terrain with plenty of slopes, or that there are strong wind and rainfall that will negatively affect your results, and which the predictor simply won’t be able to anticipate.

How to improve your half marathon time?

You can improve your half marathon time in several ways.

Follow an individualized training plan – Training according to a training plan and keeping a training log can allow you to track your progress and better understand what suits you best.

In addition to running, add strength training – By strengthening your whole body, you will reduce the risk of injury, improve strength and stability, correct your muscle imbalance, and with that also become faster.

Pay attention to your running technique – Add running drills into your training routine to improve your running technique and develop proper ground contact. With running drills, you improve the communication between your brain and your legs. Because of that, despite the exhaustion, you will still be able to maintain a proper running technique. With a proper running technique, you will improve your running economy, which means that you will maintain the same pace while losing less energy. The proper running technique will also reduce the risk of injury. If you are not running with the proper running technique, injuries will likely happen.

Do running strides – Instead of focusing only on increasing mileage, you should do exercises that increase your speed.

Don’t forget to rest – It is just as important as training. Your body needs time to adapt to stress and recover for the next training.

Tip

Listen to your body and recognize the signs of overtraining.

Good Finishing Times for Running a Half-Marathon

A half-marathon is a challenging race that can take anywhere from a little over one hour to four hours to complete. Like many aspects of running, finishing times vary greatly depending on a variety of factors, some of which include age, sex, experience, and the course.

Whether you're about to run your first half-marathon or you're hoping to beat your personal record (PR), setting a goal when training for the 13.1-mile run can help keep you motivated.

Half-Marathon Times

Elite male runners can complete a half-marathon in under an hour, while world-class female runners are around 1 hour and 10 minutes. The world record for the half-marathon is 57:32 for men (Kibiwott Kandie, 2020) and 1:04:31 for women (Ababel Yeshaneh, 2020).

But the vast majority of half-marathon runners don't run anywhere close to those times—they're records for a reason. According to RunRepeat's 2019 State of Running report, the average times for half-marathons in the U.S. are 2:02:00 for males and 2:16:00 for females.

Half Marathon Times

  • Elite men: Under 60 minutes
  • Elite women: 1:10
  • Average men: 2:02
  • Average women: 2:16

Setting Your Goals

For most first-time half-marathoners, the goal is usually to finish, rather than achieving a specific finishing time. Your first half-marathon is an automatic PR. Once you have one half-marathon under your belt, you can focus on trying to beat your PR.

Finishing a half-marathon in less than two hours is a common goal for experienced half-marathons runners. Running a sub 2 hour or 1:59:59 half-marathon means maintaining an average pace of 9:09 minutes per mile, which is considered a respectable half-marathon time among runners.

Highly competitive runners aim for harder targets, like a 1 hour and 30-minute half-marathon (6:51 minutes per mile pace or faster). Still, others make more specific time limits, such as being able to run 7:00 minutes per mile (for a half-marathon time of 1:31:44) or 8:00 minutes per mile (for a half-marathon time of 1:44:53).

If you're curious about the range of finishing times for a half-marathon that you've run or plan to run, look at the race results, which should be listed on the race's website. There you will find the range of typical finish times, including the times by age group, times of those who finished the race in the middle or in the back of the pack, and top finish times.

Factors Affecting Half-Marathon Times

The time to finish a half-marathon can vary greatly based on several factors.

When it comes to speed, male runners have the upper hand over their female counterparts. And although runners continue to improve during their late 30s, most find that their times start to slow down after age 40. To provide fair and equal opportunities, most half-marathons give awards by gender and age group.

One way to level the playing field and see how you compare to other runners, regardless of age and sex, is by using a system called age-grading. An age-grading calculator allows you to compare your times to those of other runners, as well as to the standard for your age and sex.

Weather and course terrain also are also huge variables. A half-marathoner will get a much faster time on a flat versus hilly course and in comfortable weather conditions versus uncomfortable or unfamiliar ones. It can be tough to race in the cold if you live and train in the heat, and vice versa.

Predicting Your Half-Marathon Time

Use a chart or calculator to determine a ballpark half-marathon time based on your performance at a recent race of another distance.

Keep in mind that your half-marathon time prediction is just an estimate of what you might achieve if you do the appropriate training. In most cases, only experienced half-marathoners will achieve their predicted time. If it's your first half-marathon, focus on completing the race, which is an incredible achievement in and of itself.

Note that many half-marathons have a cut-off time, or a time by which all participants must have crossed the finished line. If you don't think you can finish before the time limit (usually three hours), look for a race that's friendlier to walkers and slower runners.

How to Predict Running Race Times

How to Improve Your Half-Marathon Time

Aside from choosing a flat race during a cool season, here are some other tips to improve your next half-marathon time:

  • Do speed work once or twice a week to help improve your speed and confidence. Tempo runs, hill repeats, and interval training will make you stronger, as well as improve your running efficiency and increase your lactate threshold. All of this translates into faster running.
  • Work on finishing strong. Many half-marathoners fade in the final 2 or 3 miles of the race, slowing their overall time significantly.
  • Figure out a plan for your race to avoid going out too fast or not racing to your full potential. Once you determine your predicted time, plan to run that pace for the entire race, making slight adjustments for the course terrain.
  • Do some mental prep so you'll be ready for the inevitable rough patches that happen during the race. Try mental strategies like creating your own mantra or using imagery. Also come up with strategies for dealing with discomfort when racing.

Half-Marathon Training Schedules

If you're planning to train for and run a half-marathon, here are training schedules to choose from, based on your experience and fitness level:

A Word From Verywell

The half-marathon distance is an excellent endurance challenge for runners of all levels. It is a very popular distance and you will have many races to choose from. Find the one that will work best for your level and put in the training needed to finish strong.

Age-Graded Calculator with Equivalent Performances

You can find your age-graded percent and a list of equivalent performances at other distances here. Just enter a few details about your race below and we’ll do the rest.

How does it work?

This tool combines both an age-graded calculator and a equivalent performances calculator into one. To calculate your age graded percent (often abbreviated AGP or AG%), we take your time and divide it by the world record time at that distance. Then, depending on your age, we multiply the resulting percentage by the appropriate WMA Factor.* The result is your age graded percent.

Then, we take that AG% and use it to calculate what an equivalent performance** would be at each of our standard race distances, and return them to you in a table. So, for example, you can plug in your most recent 10K time and get an estimate of how fast you should be able to finish a half marathon. This can be very helpful for determining what pace you should aim for in your next race.

Our world records come from a few different sources. We list the official IAAF world records wherever possible and filled in from other sources in the distances that the IAAF doesn’t maintain records for. All distances 15 kilometers and longer are road times, not track times. (For example, we list the road 20K record, not the 20,000 meter track record.) For all races 10,000 meters and shorter, we list track records. To see a complete list, visit our world records page.

Note: Several of the “softer” records — 2 mile, 10 mile, 25K, 30K, and 50 mile — have been removed from this tool’s calculations because they were skewing the results. But you can still generate a prediction for those distances (or any other distance from 100 meters to 100 miles) using our race time predictor.

* We’re using the 2015 road age-grading factors published by Alan Jones on RunScore.com. You can download the files here (men’s) or here (women’s). His factors start at 5 kilometers, so for shorter races, we simply use the factor for 5 kilometers. This has proved more reliable than using the 2006 age-grading factors found on Howard Grubb’s website as we used to do. For a full list of the factors used, see our age-graded factors page.

** By equivalent performance, we mean another run with the same age graded percent. Of course, training for a 100 meter dash is ridiculously different from training for a 100 mile race, so just because the calculator gives you an equivalent time doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be able to run it. You still have to train appropriately. And, even so, your body might be better suited to run either short races or long ones so you might not be able to get to the same AG% for all distances.

Age-Graded Calculator

Directions

This calculator is intended to provide you with an age-graded race time and an achievement percentile for a recent performance at a specific race distance. Age-graded information allows you to:

  • Adjust your performance to what it theoretically would have been during your prime running years (your 20's and a portion of your 30's depending on the race distance).
  • Judge your performance, using an achievement percentile, without bias for gender or the aging process (in other words, you are measured against a specific standard for your age and sex). These percentiles can be interpreted as follows:
    • Over 90% --- World Class
    • Over 80% --- National Class
    • Over 70% --- Regional Class
    • Over 60% --- Local Class
  • Compare your performances for a specific race distance at various ages to determine which was your "best race".

If, for example, you are a 55 year old male and want see age-graded information for a time of 21:45 that you recently ran in a 5K race, simply:

  • enter 55 in the Age field
  • select Male in the Gender field
  • select 5 Kilometers as the Race Distance.
  • enter 21 in the Minutes field and 45 in the Seconds field for Race Time.
  • press the Calculate Age-Graded Race Time & Percentile button.
  • the age-graded race time and achievement percentile will appear.

Note: Age-graded tables were researched and compiled by the World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA).

For example, to be in the top 10% of all 10k runners, irrespective of gender, you'd need to get pretty close to 38 minutes! Please note that these are the best efforts of our runners - so if you're a new runner in a lowly spot, fear not! You'll improve plenty if you keep at it.
